Located behind the Mercedes-Benz dealership on Highway 111/
East Palm Canyon. The Backstreet Art District has been featuring
local artists for the past 5 years. The complex is composed of
a variety of spaces where artists have their galleries and some
also have a working studio. Most of the galleries are open from
11 - 4 weekdays, however, the working artists maintain their
own personal schedules and flexibility is the concept. All of the
galleries are open the first Wednesday of every month from 6-9
p.m. for the FIRST WEDNESDAY ART WALK displaying recent art
that has been created.
There is a rich diversity representing the arts found in the
Backstreet District. A few of the artist’s galleries were featured
in this column during the past year. The Maxson Studio and
Gallery is one featured in the DDG. Included in their exhibits
is the art and craft of Greg and Linda Maxon. Linda works
in ceramics and found organic objects and Greg works with
wood in constructing creative works from decorative boxes
to unique tables. They also feature the work of other artists
and craftspeople. The Tom Ross Gallery was also featured last
year. Tom works on clear acrylic panels painting images on
them. These individual panels are arranged around the inside
of the gallery showing a continuous painting evolving from
underwater to landscape fantasy scenes. Each panel tells a story
within itself and also acts entirely as a stand-alone painting
which can be removed from the panorama of paintings.
Several new galleries have arisen during the
past year, including, The Studio, featuring the
photography of Chari Godakanda which also
houses his studio and darkroom, along with his
book design and printing business. The gallery of
Marconi Calindas is also a new addition. He works in a variety of
media creating both two and three-dimensional artworks. His
work will be featured in a future addition of the DDG. His closest
neighboring gallery has the artist Carina Cravcenco, her gallery
includes her works along with other artists she features. All of
these new galleries along with those that have existed in the
District will have many new surprises and enticements included
in this week’s Wednesday Art Walk. For art lovers and anyone
looking for an exhilarating option for Wednesday evening
This legislation provides a property tax
Message from KELLY SEYARTO
State Senator, 32nd District
I am pleased to announce that SB 520
has been signed into law.
Spirit Day Approaches
Spirit Day is the world’s most visible antibullying
movement, inspiring LGBTQ
youth - especially transgender and
nonbinary youth - to live their lives in
truth and authenticity. On Thursday
October 19, millions of supporters will
go purple to support LGBTQ youth.
Will you be one of them? Take the
GLAAD Hosts Inaugural Black Queer
Last month, GLAAD hosted the inaugural
to combat HIV stigma; and to increase
In 1988, Prop. 93 established the
Homeowners’ Property Tax Exemption,
but with the addition of Prop 19 in 2020,
some groups were undefined when
it came to the qualification of said
exemption. To ensure their home would
still qualify and be eligible for inheritance
without tax reassessment, some families
were led to remove elderly parents from
hospice or specialized care.
The homeowner who has previously
qualified for the exemption should not
lose that right because they are in a
hospital or live-in care facility.
I am proud to be able to make this
clarification and help California’s
families keep their homes.
SB 520 was sponsored by the Howard
Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA).
why HJTA was proud to sponsor SB 520
and we thank Senator Seyarto and his
By clarifying this part of Prop. 19, SB 520
We just finished a series of stops in
Nashville and Atlanta and are heading
to Virginia and Washington, D.C. next
Traveling around the country on
thousands of MoveOn members—
you’re librarians, parents, students,
educators, authors, and, above all,
It’s been heartwarming to be in
community with other book lovers.
Something special happens when
we come together in support of our
freedom to learn and to read. We’ve
bonded over our shared love of
The Indian Canyons
Fifteen miles long, Palm Canyon is one of
the areas of great beauty in Western North
America. Its indigenous flora and fauna, which
the Cahuilla people so expertly used, and its
abundant Washingtonia filifera (California Fan
Palm) are breathtaking contrasts to the stark
rocky gorges and barren desert lands beyond.
A moderately graded foot path winds down
into the canyon for picnicking near the stream,
meditation, exploring, hiking or horseback
riding. For more information call 760-323-6018
