Seeking Participants for UCLA Research Study 

on Long-Term Care 

What is the purpose of the research? To learn about... 

1. experiences between gay and lesbian (or non- heterosexual) older 

adults and long-term care providers and 

2. ideas about how long-term care providers can be responsive to lesbian 

and gay older people. 

Who can participate? Men who are at least 50 years old, have had 

contact with long-term care providers, and EITHER: 

• Identify as gay, OR BOTH 

• have had only male sex partners over the past 20 years 

• are only attracted to men 

What does participation involve? If you volunteer for this study you will 

be asked to participate in a one-on-one interview in which you will answer 

questions about your experience of long-term care providers and ideas 

about what it means for long-term care providers to be responsive to 

lesbian and gay older adults. You will also be asked to provide feedback on 

the researcher’s analysis at a later date. You will be able to withdraw from 

the study at any time with no penalty. Each participant will receive $40. You 

do NOT need to travel to UCLA to participate.

INDIAN WELLS ART SHOW 

This was a well organized show, managed 

by Sprectrum, at the Renaissance Indian 

Wells Resort. It featured a sculpture garden 

outside of the main lobby and a large 

gallery exhibit area inside in THconvention 

meeting room area directly off of the lobby. 

There were over 40 galleries from across the 

country featuring hundreds of artists. 

The primary attraction of this show was the 

ability to meet, talk with, and watch artists 

creating works during the show. 

Another artist visited was Francesca Saveri. 

She was demonstrating an encaustic

Even a marriage inside a federal immigration center did not dampen spirits of this 

happy couple. But for the United States, it wsas the first same-sex marriage of someone 

in detention awaiting a deportation hearing. 

But Swann makes history all the time! For veterans, and the LGBT community. “This 

is the happiest day of my life,” said Swann, 58, shortly after he wed Hernandez. “Happier 

than the day I graduated boot camp in the Marine Corps.” Mr. Swann’s military 

case was instrumental in securing protection against sexual orientation discrimination 

for lesbian and gay civilian employees of the Armed Services. “Tom Swann’s book 

is a how to succeed handbook, a standard operating procedure for gay activists taking 

on the conservative establishment, whether it is in government or the private sector. 

Served on the national AMVETS Diversity Committee, Tom founded Riverside County 

Veterans for Peace and spoke at Camp Casey (Crawford, Texas) with Cindy Sheehan. 

Dedicated the peace pole outside Cathedral City Library and at Desert Mirage 

High School, Swann is founding chair of the only certified Democratic Party veterans’ 

caucus in America. Personally met every American President since Richard Nixon.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore 

Well, it’s time for the next step for 

Miss Jersey. Time to take the next 

step in this characters creation. 

Sometimes we feel complacent in 

our lives or routines. We get used to 

doing this a certain way just to get 

by and you forget to give it that extra 

oomph and turn into second or third 

gear. I’ll be going back into third 

gear I think. The clutch got stuck, as 

it does in life. It’s a good thing. All 

you have to do is shift and work your 

way up that hill and through the 

obstacles. 

They are only obstacles. They aren’t 

a concrete entity. Obstacles CAN be 

moved and driven through. You just 

have to move it and give it a push. It 

will move and you will advance to 

the next path in life. 

Road blocks are learning curves in 

the road of life. You need them to 

learn and move forward. Drive past 

and read the signs. Take heed in what 

they say or just take the consequences. 

You will learn a lesson no matter 

what path you take, it’s just a matter 

of making the journey an easy one 

with less hassles or calls to AAA. 

So, I’m jumping on the highway of 

life and looking for my new exit plan. 

I will have billboards up showcasing 

where I will be so, even if I get stuck 

in traffic, life’s GPS will guide me to 

some kind of paradise. My GPS has a 

plan for me, even if it’s only pulling 

over to the side of the road; I know 

that every road leads towards you.
