Seeking Participants for UCLA Research Study
on Long-Term Care
What is the purpose of the research? To learn about...
1. experiences between gay and lesbian (or non- heterosexual) older
adults and long-term care providers and
2. ideas about how long-term care providers can be responsive to lesbian
and gay older people.
Who can participate? Men who are at least 50 years old, have had
contact with long-term care providers, and EITHER:
• Identify as gay, OR BOTH
• have had only male sex partners over the past 20 years
• are only attracted to men
What does participation involve? If you volunteer for this study you will
be asked to participate in a one-on-one interview in which you will answer
questions about your experience of long-term care providers and ideas
about what it means for long-term care providers to be responsive to
lesbian and gay older adults. You will also be asked to provide feedback on
the researcher’s analysis at a later date. You will be able to withdraw from
the study at any time with no penalty. Each participant will receive $40. You
do NOT need to travel to UCLA to participate.
Fascinatin’ Rhythm”
Palm Springs, CA- Tuesday, April 12 2016...
and shakers of Native Americans; Taiko
drums in Japan; log drums and gourd
shakers in Africa and snare drum and
Drums are used in sacred rites, healing
by medicine men, accompaniment for
joyous dancing and the muffled drum used
for military funerals.
The “Fascinatin’ Rhythm” program will
include: “Nine Hundred Miles” by Douglas
E. Wagner, “Conga Rhythm” recorded
by Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound
Machine, “Rhythm of Life” by Cy Coleman,
“Ritmo” words and music by Dan Davison,
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore ON VACATION!
This week Jersey is on vacation. One
of the hardest working people in Palm
Springs entertainment.
So we thought we would say Thanks, from
the community. People often write to tell
us how much they enjoyed a show with
Jersey headlining or in the cast. She is
sassy, intelligent and you know you have
seen world class entertainment. Next time
you see her, let her know you appreciate
the work, ethics, and humor she brings to
the community each week.
What you might not know is that Jersey
has been a well known entity to the Desert
for over a decade, appearing at multiple
venues all over the desert. You name
it, and Jersey has probably performed
there. Currently, Jersey is performing regularly
at CCBC Resort and the wonderful
Georgie’s Alibi Azul Patio. Past venues
include Hard Rock Hotel, and most of
Arenas Blvd. To the hardest working
Bitch on heals!
Fuck those bitches, We love you!
THE FIRST EROTIC GAY POSTAGE STAMPS - TOM OF
FINLAND
Tom of Finland is known to most gay
men who have any voyeuristic tendencies.
His erotic drawings have been seen in
publications for the past 40+ years. Tom
of Finland whose real name was Touko
Laaksonen is considered one of the most
well known Finish artists around the world.
He was born in Finland in 1920 and died
in 1991. He lived some of his career life in
Los Angeles where his drawings and his
positive influence on exposing the LGBT
community to the general public was both
controversial and positive.
were more than just the “dirty drawings”
he himself affectionately called them. They
can be credited for gay men changing in
their own self-image from hidden, living in
the shadows, to more positive exposing of
the male physique and sexuality. As quoted
in the “Short Biography of Tom of Finland”,
by the Tom of Finland Foundation,
quote, “I work very hard to make sure that
the men I draw having sex are proud men
having happy sex.”
Tom of Finland’s life and art will be the
topic of a future article.
Questions, comments, suggestions, please
contact at: adamsartexpose@gmail.com
Two of his drawings were selected in 2014,
by the Finish Itella Posti, (equivalent to the
U.S. Postal Service), to be placed on their
postage stamps. The stamps which are
shown with this article are examples of his
drawings and the subjects of the drawings.
They are considered to be the most erotic
postal stamps issued by any country.
LBGT subject, stamps have been issued
in the U.S., for example the Harvey Milk
stamp in 2015. A stamp commemorating
the world war II codebreaker Alan Turing
was featured in Great Britain in 2012. The
Tom of Finland stamps however are considered
the most erotic in topic, featuring gay
eroticism, of any ever issued. His drawings
The PSGMC Concert
“Fascinaitng Rhythm”
Simeon Den, interdisciplinary artist/educator/and
choreographer, will be featured in
the upcoming production of “Fascinating
Rhythm,” the Spring concert of the Palm
Springs Gay Mens Chorus, dancing in the
movement style of Butoh Dance.
Butoh is an avant garde theater dance discipline
best described to Western audiences as
“moving sculpture,” whereby the performer
moves trans-like in a lyrical slow-motion.
The unorthodox Butoh dance theater
emerged from the Japanese art aesthetic
after World War II in response to the devastation
that resulted from the atomic bombing
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It depicted
ghost-like performers body painted and costumes
completely in white. Moving slowly
in non-traditional performance spaces and
not limited to indoor proscenium stages.
In an early presentation of Butoh theater,
over a hundred people—men, women and
children, painted an dressed head-to-toe
in white, painstakingly, slowly and eerily
moved through the streets of Hiroshima.
Den has choreographed his offering to “Gloria
Tibi,” and excerpt from Leonard Bernstein’s
“Mass.”
Trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance
Center and the Martha Graham School of
Contemporary Dance, he performed on the
New York concert dance stage with companies
including the Alvin Ailey Repertory
Dance Ensemble and Joyce Trisler’s Danscompany.
He was in the original Broadway
company of Steohen Sondheim’s “Pacific
Overtures” and the revival of “The King and
I” starring Yul Brynner. He has also performed
and collaborated with luminariesn
including Lena Horne, Shiirley MacLaine,
Gower Champion, and Jerome Robbins.
Den is the co-chair of the Cathedral City
Public Arts Commission and lives in the
historic home of celebrated American Modernist
painter, Agnes Pelton, located in the
Cathedral City Cove and is the executive
Pride 2014 Organization of the Year
“For Family & Friends”
The Desert Rose Playhouse will present
Javier Rivera’s one-man show, SALVE
REGINA: A COMING OF GAY STORY,
on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 8 PM and
Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 2 PM. Being born
in a tiny island in the Caribbean to an
ultra-religious mother and a domineering
father is not easy; especially when it’s likely
you are a big queen. There are not enough
novenas to pray, candles to be lit, or saints
to hear your pleas to get you out unscathed.
No, in this situation only a miracle will do,
or better yet...a holy intervention.
Follow the coming of age story of a young
Puerto Rican man as he triumphs and
stumbles in his journey to self-discovery
aided by the only person who ever
understood him...pop superstar Madonna.
SALVE REGINA: A COMING OF GAY
STORY comes from the heart of Javier
Rivera and is directed by Jeremy Ohringer.
“SALVE REGINA is my way of reaching
out to 8 year old me,” playwright and performer
Javier Rivera reflects, “and assuring
him that things will be all right…which is
a feeling I was not familiar with at that age.
I was terrified of burning in hell for being
gay…not being poetic here, I truly believed
I was going to fry. All signs pointed to me
not having a very happy ending.
“So I latched on to the music of Madonna,
and all of a sudden I felt empowered, in
control, and overcome with an overwhelming
desire to dance. She DID make my life
a happier place to live in—this is the truth.
And to those in the audience, I hope you
hold on tight to those things that inspire
you and bring a smile to your face…and
let go of anything that makes you question
your worth and place on this planet.
Because it does not matter whether you can
cut a rug or have two left feet…you can
still be the life of the party”.
JUNK is about two gay men, one younger,
contents of the North Carolina cabin of
a recently deceased man in exchange for
cleaning it up so that the house might be
THAT IS FUNNY
What did the Bartender say when two jumper cables walk into a bar. “You guys better not start anything
in here.”
What does a termite say when he walks into a bar? “Is the bar tender here?”
Infinitely many mathematicians walk into a bar. The first says, “I’ll have a beer.” The second says, “I’ll have
half a beer.” The third says, “I’ll have a quarter of a beer.” Before anyone else can speak, the barman fills
up exactly two glasses of beer and serves them. “Come on, now,” he says to the group, “You guys have got to
learn your limits.”
A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads
for the door. “Hey!” shouts the bartender, but the panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Google me!” Sure enough,
panda: “A tree-climbing mammal with distinct black-and-white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.”
WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS
ARIES March 20 - April 18: Okay,
so you forgot your mom’s birthday.
Big deal. Your father, too?
What about your partners? Good
god, man, buy a calendar.
TAURUS April 19 - May 19: Just
because a friend buys you a beer
doesn’t mean you have to reciprocate.
You should, though.
GEMINI May 20 - June 19: You
get the sneaking suspicion that
someone’s following you. Except
they probably aren’t...oh my god!
BEHIND YOU! Ha, false alarm.
CANCER June 20 - July 21: If you
get into a sticky situation, just
play dumb and hope that it goes
away or solves itself. It always
works, especially when you are
dumb. Dummy.
LEO July 22 - Aug. 21: You’re all
primed for new encounters. How
do we know? Okay, so we saw
your name on the speed-dating
roster. Sorry we cheated there.
VIRGO Aug. 22 - Sept. 21: Going
full-tilt only will get you so far.
Going half-tilt will get you at
least half of the way. That’s...ok.
LIBRA Sept. 22 - Oct. 21: It’s
good to have things like faith
and hope. It’s not exactly great to
have faith that you’re significant
other will stop hogging all the ice
cream. Move on.
SCORPIO. Oct. 22 - Nov. 20: Pretending
to be someone you’re not
can get you into sticky situations.
Like when Jack Tripper pretended
he was gay. What a good show.
SAGITTARIUS Nov. 21-Dec.
20: Just because you agree with
someone on a subject doesn’t
make you correct. I mean, have
you ever seen a unicorn?
CAPRICORN Dec. 21-Jan. 18:
You’re treading water, so be careful
of sharks and whatever is in
the depths of the deepest ocean,
because that’s some scary crap.
AQUARIUS Jan. 19 - Feb. 17:
Did you know that it’s baseball
season? The Boston Red Sox are
defending champs. And that...
that was it. That’s my team. Yeah!
PISCES Feb. 18 - March 19: You
can’t let fear hold you back from
achieving what you want. Unless
it’s fighting a lion. Then it’s okay,
I guess. Right? That’s okay...?
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Well I have traveled through Bangalore, Tirrapur,
Erode, the Nilgris Valley and Calicut. I am on the
way to Kannur before I return to Bangalore and
my plane home.
For those who know me, I am a passionate advocate
for passenger rail service so I am especially
excited to be on a train from Calicut to Kannur on
this leg of the journey. Tonight the schedule calls
for a trip by boat up a river.
I am visiting India through a Rotary International
Friendship Exchange where folks from our district
visit a country and a few weeks later a group from
that country returns the visit. At the end of April,
there will be 6 couples from India visiting us for
three weeks. We stay in host homes, eat with
the families, tour sites and speak at many Rotary
Clubs all through the area we are visiting. Tomorrow
in fact, we will speak to three different clubs.
The country is heavily Hindu, but has many religions;
including Muslim, Christian, Sikh and others.
There are 40 different languages, about one
for each state.
What we would call chaos, seems to work for
them. They have developed a representative
democracy with a strong diversity. That doesn’t
mean there are not concerns. Certainly, the most
noticeable is both income inequality and gender
inequality. You can begin to see signs that
attempts are being made to change, but as with
environmental challenges, etc it will take generations.
Homosexuality is illegal and the LGBT world is
strictly undercover. In fact oral sex, even among
married heterosexual couples is illegal. I had a
lengthy conversation with one of my hosts who
told me that in Indian history, there never was an
issue with homosexuality, transgender or other
sexual minorities, but that changed with the British
colonization as imposition of Victorian norms.
After decades of British rule oppression of gays,
etc became established.
As I mentioned last week, gay apps like Grindr are
very popular, so there may be hope that the young
people will lead the way to a new enlightenment.
Rotary too can help, as they have been instrumental
in the fight against HIV and AIDS in developing
countries.
Closer to home, Cathedral City recently did some
changes for our society’s betterment. The City
Council passed an ordinance requiring same gender
restrooms in all Commercial and industrial
buildings. The city and chamber of commerce
are putting into place and the city is reimbursing
businesses for the cost of sign-age. Additionally
we passed a ban on single use plastic bags in all
stores. That has seemed to be going smoothly
with only minor complaints. Again the city will
provide free bags upon request.
There are now 10 openly LGBT elected officials in
the valley; council members, school board trustees
and water agency directors. We are trying to meet
socially 3-4 times a year to just simply get to know
each other in a non political sense and see how we
can continue to make our valley better. Our visit
get together was in Rancho Mirage at the home of
Councilman Charles Townsend. Five of us were
there and hopefully our next meet will have all of
us.
By the time this is published I will be back on US
soil and seeing what mischief I can get into.
Moving forward!
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral City.
He has made his name in governmental circles as an
expert in transportation issues and is very active in working
on bringing passenger rail service to the COACHELLA
Valley. Greg was the first openly gay elected city council
members In Riverside County. He has served on the
boards of the National League of Cities and the League of
California Cities and as President of the Southern CA Asso-
