CALIFORNIA PRIMARY NOTES
by Sebastiano Grasso
I first want to explain to my fellow Democrats
why I support Hillary Clinton for the
Presidency.
Firstly, she is a self-made woman who has
dedicated her life to addressing the complex
cultural and economic inequalities women
face in a world still dominated by men. It is
time to have a strong advocate for the underrepresented
half of the American public at
the helm of our political system.
Secondly, her international experience gives
her a credibility in foreign policy that no
other candidate can rival. Her international
credentials give me comfort that the nuances
of US foreign policy would be thoroughly
and thoughtfully deliberated.
Thirdly, as a member of the LGBT community,
I feel confident she will continue to defend
the legacy of the Obama administration in
regard to protecting our rights and pushing
for Federal anti-discrimination protections.
Finally, she is the most promising candidate
that may have the courage to reform
our criminal justice system, strengthen the
Voting Rights Act, and publicly address
racial inequalities that continue to plague
our nation. Let us continue what President
Obama has begun. I encourage you to support
Hillary Clinton for President of the
United States of America.
Sebastiano Grasso was born in Erice, Italy, a
remote Sicilian village where he completed
studies in Art at the Liceo Artistico in Reggio
Callabria. Sebastiano has since lived, studied,
and created art in both small towns and
urban metropolises across Europe and the
United States.
Using mixed media on canvas, Mr. Grasso
strives to evoke his own emotions through
abstract formations of color, collage and texture.
Mr. Grasso’s work explores the linear
and circular relationships between hope, awe,
disillusionment and despair. “When I look
at my work, I want to feel the relationship
between wonder and distress that I thought I
understood when I began the piece.” Always
experimenting with new media and different
techniques, Grasso hopes his audience can
recognize his emotions and feel his insights
while viewing his work.
After completing his studies at the Liceo
Artistico, Mr. Grasso moved to Rome where
he was trained in the Stanislavski method
while performing at the Teatro dei Cocchi,
Teatro Agora, and Teatro degli Artisti. His
work has been exhibited in Studio Cometa
in Galatone, Italy; Primo Piano Galleria in
Lecce, Italy; Ave 50 Studio in Highland Park,
CA; The Italian Cultural Center in Eagle
Rock, CA; The Arroyo Seco Arts Tour in
Pasadena, CA; The Highway 62 Art Tour in
Morongo Basin; The JT Art Gallery in Joshua
Tree, CA; and the Back Street Arts District in
Palm Springs, CA. Much of his work can be
KEITH HARING - GAY ARTIST AND ACTIVIST
Aaron Copland was born in 1900 to a conservative
Jewish family in Brooklyn, New
York. His early ability at music was noted
when he was 4 years old with exceptional
ability at playing piano. By the age of 8 he
was already composing music. He attended
concerts in New York during his teen years
and decided at that time that he wanted to
be a composer.
During the 1920’s he traveled and studied
in Europe where he spend much of his time
in the presence of other expatriate artists
from the U.S. such as Ernest Hemingway,
Sinclair Lewis and Gertrude Stein. At
the time he was also studying with Nadia
Boulanger a well known strict Parisian
musician and trainer. Copland returned to
the U.S. in 1925 and went through a period
of economic depression, as was the country
beginning to experience during that time.
He was also known as the Dean of American
music helping to continue relationships
between 5 young American composers;
Roger Sessions, Roy Harris, Virgil Thomson,
and Walter Piston along with Copland
egging the group called the “commando
unit”, to promote each others work. He
continued to promote and aid young musicians
throughout his career.
pieces (The Young Pioneers) and an opera,
(The Second Hurricane). He also traveled
extensively during the depression in Mexico,
Africa and Europe. During this time he
worked with the Mexican composer, Carlos
Chavez, which helped to compel him to begin
writing one of his early signature works,
El Salon Mexico.
Copland neither flaunted nor hid his gay
life. He had short lived affairs of a year or
two,with several young men
all about 10 years younger than he. He had
an ongoing relationship with a young violinist,
named Victor Kraft, who was 17 and
Copland 32 when they met. Kraft spent
time with Copland in Mexico which is
credited with inspiring him to write El Salon
Mexico. Ongoing in and out relationships
with other young artists caused Kraft,
in jealousy, to have an affair with Lenard
Bernstein, which broke off in short time
and Kraft married a musician with whom
he fathered a child. Kraft and Copland
continued a long relationship with Kraft
eventually becoming his personal secretary,
as Copland’s popularity and financial stability
increased. Copland left a trust for the
child of Victor Kraft in his will.
Aaron Copland is known for being a composer
for movie scores, especially movies
of the American west. His “Fanfare For the
Common Man”, is played on state occasions
such as the funeral of Gerald Ford in 2007.
His works are extensive, including, symphonies,
music scores and operas. Here is a
Copland went on to compose music during
the depression that exposed the plight
of young children. This included piano
score, John Henry, orchestra piece, Appalachian
Spring, orchestra,
Rodeo, ballet, The Red Pony, film score,
Something Wild, sound score, and on and on
with hundreds of compositions. Aaron Copland
was a gay artist ahead of his time and a
iconic American Composer, 1900 - 1990.
P.S. Smith Vargas Fine Art Gallery which was
featured in a previous article in the DDG
Why Hillary! Will Paige
Not ready for primary time?
The simple truth of broken promises is that
the pieces that remain, show a bigger story
than the one we fell for. As we come down to
the wire, I hope all the shouting and all the
boasting has made it clear we have the winning
candidate in the palm of our hand. One thing
is for sure, the drubbing Trump gave his opponents
in the republican race may have helped
him lose the general election. Bernie Sanders,
sadly, also suffers the same fate. As most of you
know, I wasted no time recommending him.
But let me be clear, I don’t hate Bernie! I don’t
love the guy either, that would be queer of me.
His race was clearly a round of beer pong, one
shot away from the win, but he fouled on the
elbow and wrist rules. While it forced others
into an imaginary Frat house, chest thumping
to others, it was anything but Presidential. Still
it does not matter at this point. When you create
a cult-like status, you crease a sizable population,
feeding on its own frustration at every
turn. The collision of these two fronts hopefully
crested in Nevada and we can begin to focus
on the issues.
The internet is an amazing tool. It is better
than any poll because it is the unprompted
actions of the people by the people and for the
people and they are alone responsible. This is
the Sanders notion “Look what you made me
do.” You must also understand the media caters
to both the advertiser and to the public, but
all must shop as the advertising store. No one
wants to upset people unless you have a different
game. As articles on atheism go up, sales of
Easter cards go down. The “99%” are no better
in that way than the rich and powerful who
also demand bias, because we not only like
“slant” we demand it. I noticed it when I had a
radio show, how weeks before tax time you can
hear the radio knobs shutting off to the tax ads,
because we are sick of hearing about it.
If you look at the supply chain for news, it’s
really not too difficult to distill the truth out of
it. The supply chain begins when a news story
happens. Often no one is around to document
it. Unless a news crew happens to be at the
same spot, at the exact same time it happens.
The story is retold after information is taken
from eye witnesses and bystanders. Then it’s
spun again when a video shows up. Then recycled
until enough people claim its old news.
Then it becomes part of the historic truth.
That story is redeveloped and then slanted for
whichever entity or entities broadcast it. Go
to press too early and you could be wrong, too
late and it could be ignored as old news.
Lastly it is often said all politicians lie, and that
may be the only consistent truth but ironically,
they are often more honest than those that support
them. Information of the people from the
people are often the most unreliable. Sometimes
the only way the truth can escape is by
complete accident, but for us it can been found
easily in comparison.
The conclusion seems inescapable that both
Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are running
against the status quo, but at the same time
doing it in such an unnecessarily arrogant way,
it’s causing massive divisions within each of
“their own” parties. History won’t remember
the right or wrong of their campaign, but few
will pull the lever for either of them over Hillary
Clinton. We have finally reached a point
where a significant group in each party hates
their own candidate for one reason or another.
If ever there was room for unity, now would be
the time. Vote your pick June 7
THAT IS FUNNY
When I see lovers’ names carved in a tree, I don’t think it’s sweet. I just think it’s surprising how many
people bring a knife on a date.
Yes, money cannot buy you happiness, but I’d still feel a lot more comfortable crying in a new BMW than on
a bike
What do you get when you cross-breed a shark and a cow?
I have no idea but I wouldn’t try milking it.
9 out of 10 voices in my head are telling me that I am too fat. The last one is calmly preparing a bowl of
chips.
Husband brings the child home from kindergarten and asks his wife, “He’s been crying the whole way home.
Isn’t he sick or something?” “No,” replies the wife, “he was just trying to tell you he isn’t our Frankie.”
Two police officers crash their car into a tree. After a moment of silence, one of them says, “Wow, that’s
got to be the fastest we ever got to the accident site
That said you can still be
guarded and optimistic.
LEO July 22 - Aug. 21: A casual
remark leaves you wondering if
someone knows more than they
let on. But don’t worry. It was just
a lucky guess.
VIRGO Aug. 22 - Sept. 21: That
it turns out to be a false alarm or
it will be called off last minute.
LIBRA Sept. 22 - Oct. 21: There
AQUARIUS Jan. 19 - Feb. 17:
Put the finishing touches on a
pitch or proposal and send it on
you want success and you need to
strike while the iron’s hot!
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
What a week! Saturday started off with
my colleague and I, Shelley Kaplan, traveling
to National City to attend a Bernie
Sanders rally. While there, I was able to
speak to the Senator and his staff and
invite them to Cathedral City. Little did I
know, four days later I will be standing in
front of 4100 screaming Bernie fans at Big
League Dreams giving an introduction
speech for him!
People began to line up at 2:30am to get a
good position to hear and see Bernie and
he certainly didn’t fail to wow the crowd.
He spoke on many of his basic progressive
talking points and got in a few zingers on
Donald Trump.
Primary day in California is June 7 and it
looks like the polls between Sanders and
Secretary Clinton are narrowing. Regardless
of who you vote for, be sure to vote!
This year is so critical. I can’t imagine
turning the keys to the White House over
to the buffoon with a yellow comb-over.
November also will see city council races
and for College of the Desert trustees.
Fred Jandt, currently represents Palm
Springs and Cathedral City and is running
for his first full term. Prior to his
retirement, he was Dean of the Cal State
campus in Palm Desert. Bright, articulate
and definitely someone you should get to
know.
Many of the valley elected’s went to Las
Vegas this past week for the annual International
Council of Shopping Centers for
a major economic development push for
our region. Between all the cities, well
over 100 meetings with developers and
retailers were held. Hopefully deals will
begin to be announced soon.
Finally, schools are finishing their 2015-
2016 academic year. All of our valley
school’s orchestras and bands are giving
their final concerts. Mayor Stan Henry
and I had the opportunity to attend the
CCHS final event and see over 200 students
perform like professionals! If you
can go to one of the school’s concerts do
so and support our kids.
Still asking folks to give me their thoughts
on Clinton v Sanders. Even though the
primary is June 7, my delegate vote won’t
be given until the convention in Philadelphia,
so I would like your thoughts.
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral
City. He has made his name in governmental circles
as an expert in transportation issues and is very active
in working on bringing passenger rail service to the
COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay
elected city council members In Riverside County. He
has served on the boards of the National League of
Cities and the League of California Cities and as President
