I don’t consider it paying for sex. It’s being

THE NEW FACE OF PRIDE 

June is pride month, as this article’s focus is 

only on LA pride. I think the Palm Springs 

Pride is different then most of the nation, 

in that we are a gay community, a tourist 

destination and a decidedly more elder 

community. 

LA and most major cities are both like 

Palm Springs and we probably don’t have 

the same issues each year. 

LA Pride 2016 runs June 10 through 12, 

2016 at West Hollywood Park (647 N San 

Vicente Blvd). The parade kicks off on June 

12 at 11am. It runs along Santa Monica 

Boulevard from Crescent Heights to Robertson. 

Three-day general admission tickets are 

$55 before June 3 and $60 after. VIP passes 

cost $125 before June 3 and $150 after. 

Single day tickets will be available starting 

June 3. The largest price increase in 10 

years. 

BUT WHO IS GOING? 

The world changes often. Some days it 

seems like in a way that is natural and 

others more helter shelter. But this Pride 

month has started and some people are 

already over it. 

Recently the story was “LA Pride has sold 

out and become ‘gay Coachella,’ critics say” 

The short answer is no one sold out. When 

we look at the bigger picture everything is 

changing. It’s not just the climate, Blanche, 

it’s all changing. Fifteen years ago I wrote 

in this DDG about the claim gay bars will 

be gone in 15 years. But the only surprise 

was that there was no surprise. Gay bars 

took a hit for be sure, but they remained 

strong. We made changes, in some places 

we have gone from jock nights to bridal 

showers, but we adjusted. Those that faint 

at the sight and smell of a straight woman

and schedules became more tailored to 

what your focus is, but some classes are

actually remembers, we would love to 

interview you our upcoming Pride. The 

first LA pride parade in 1970 and many 

feared it was an invitation to assault. In 

fact some of the organizers I knew from 

the Christopher street west called it a 

license to hunt gays. They got booed, 

some tomatoes, but mostly it felt like a 

real movement. One year after Stonewall 

Inn riots and it was still fresh in everyone’s 

minds. They chose the name Christopher 

Street West as the producing group, 

because of Stonewall. It’s better to go this 

year because a big part of that commitment 

to stonewall is leaving, an new generation 

will define what it is.

presidential campaign is about to commence 

with the 

party conventions in the next couple of 

months logos will become more visually 

prevalent. 

At this time the three contenders in the 

Republican and Democratic campaigns 

are 

Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Democratic 

Party, and Donald Trump for 

the Republican party. The logos that 

are presently being used may be modified 

or completely revised after the final 

contenders are selected after the party 

conventions.

these Trump slogans are found on red 

baseball caps.

of the Pride celebration. A multi-day festival 

celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and 

transgender people. And at the forefront of 

every LGBT crisis from AIDS crisis to 

same-sex marriage. 

We still have much to do in advocation, 

protecting and awareness of LGBT issues. 

As Christopher Street West looks for a new 

way to revitalize this important event and 

appeal to the millennials. More concerts 

raising ticket prices and, cutting time on 

free events dedicated to transgender people 

and lesbians. 

They called it “gay Coachella,” organized 

under the moniker #NotOurPride. and 

the organizers attempted to resolve some 

issues. 

“What they have done is a blatant commercialization 

of Pride and a disregard of Los 

Angeles’ LGBT community’s history and 

legacy,” said Peter Cruz, associate director 

of the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention 

Team, which has spearheaded the protests.

Well I finished my soul searching last 

Sunday, June 5 (two days before primary) 

and pledged my super delegate vote to 

Hillary Clinton. If you have been reading 

this column you know I met with Bernie 

Sanders twice, but I also had the opportunity 

to meet with Hillary Clinton. 

I was invited to her rally in San Bernardino 

and then she and I had a private 

meeting after her speech. I specifically 

spoke to her about the need for significant 

federal investment in passenger rail 

service, not just high speed rail, but long 

distance rail. We also discussed the need 

for a strong Office of Urban Affairs in 

the White House, staffed with people that 

can really address the needs of cities of all 

sizes and their residents. 

She was engaged, interested in the discussion 

and able to talk to the issue I 

brought up. I had been torn between Sen 

Sanders passion and Secretary Clinton’s 

experience. At the end, I had to look at 

experience, ability to lead our country, 

work with Congress and actually make 

things happen. Ultimately, that made my 

decision easy. 

Now that the primary season is effectively 

over regardless of which candidate 

you were backing, now all of us must 

get behind Hillary Clinton. There is no 

question who will stand up for our rights. 

Mr Trump has already stated he wants to 

roll back our right to marriage. What else 

would we have to look forward too. 

Outside of politics, the Greater Palm 

Springs Visitors and Convention Bureau 

is taking their program on the road visiting 

city councils throughout the valley 

talking about their marketing plans for 

the valley; including air and rail service.

Cathedral City is about to celebrate its 

35th anniversary in November. The 

annual balloon festival will be held then 

and several jazz concerts, one featuring 

Diane Schurr, local jazz great. Begin to 

look for advertising on this as you will not 

want to miss it. At the same time we will 

be dedicating a significant art piece honoring 

another great Cathedral City music 

legend, Lalo Guerrero. 

We are in summer now, but nothing is 

slowing down! Enjoy the heat and all that 

the valley has to offer

City. He has made his name in governmental circles 

as an expert in transportation issues and is very active 

in working on bringing passenger rail service to the 

COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay 

elected city council members In Riverside County. He 

has served on the boards of the National League of 

Cities and the League of California Cities and as President 

of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
