This is the headline on the brochure 

for the Woodman/Shimko Gallery one 

of the newest galleries located in the 

Uptown Design District at 1105 N. Palm 

Canyon. 

Mr Woody Shimko who lives part time 

in Palm Springs and other part in Provincetown, 

Massachusetts where he has 

another gallery. 

During the 1980’ and 90’s he was art 

director of up scale stores in New York, 

Alfred Dunhill, Armani, Bergdorf 

Goodman, and Tiffany. In the mid 90’s 

he was offered a position with Marui department 

store in Tokyo. After working 

with Marui for a few years he was offered 

a position with Aim Create, a leading 

design company in Tokyo. He spent 

15 years in Japan where he designed, 

created, and facilitated the interiors 

and visuals in many of Japan’s shopping 

malls, boutiques, restaurants and also 

Narita Airport. After his return to the 

U.S. in 2012 he opened the Woodman/ 

Shimko Gallery in Palm Springs after 

his gallery in Provincetown. 

works would appeal to the LGTP 

community as well as collectors and 

those who appreciate art generally. The 

photos in this article provide a 

glimpse of the variety of art to be appreciated 

in the gallery from painting, 

photography, sculpture, and other. 

Mr. Shimko still does interior design 

work and he also creates tables from 

Japanese shoji screens and other industrial 

materials to contrast with the wood

PRAY FOR ORLANDO The official 

death toll was released by the city of 

Orlando and has the names and ages of the 

49 victims who were killed in a nightclub 

shooting. Six of the more than 50 wounded 

were listed in critical condition Tuesday 

and five others were in guarded condition. 

We know this because the gay movement 

has been successful, not only in changing 

laws, but wining allies in the hearts and 

minds of many in this nation. While the 

LGBT community continues to suffer the 

slings and arrows of outrageous biblical 

references, it is clear we have so many 

more on our side, far more than those seek 

to oppress us. I stand proud and happy 

because, those that hate us, have clearly 

also shown hate for others and that means 

their end is near. Because Gay rights are 

human rights, as our first woman democratic 

nominee has stated internationally, 

everyone can understand the comparison. 

A new dawn has landed, a new nation is 

beginning to see a new reality that is inclusive 

and differentiated in a positive way. 

You still have to look for it, but it’s there 

and it is growing. The notion all gays are 

bad, is not any different than all Muslims 

are bad, all people of color are criminal. 

Consider the notion that gays “pop out” of 

all people, white, black, rich or poor, we are 

unique in the hate-ism category and the 

word gay-ism seems more like a sexy thing. 

We are also the shape shifters of that world, 

for the most part we can blend straight and 

mask our identity to our genders. When we 

came out, it was a bigot-al game changer, 

replaced only by social networking biggest 

function. The Facebook status! “I feel so 

happy to be Gay today” followed quickly by 

Facebooks worst function the “reply” button. 

“Happy? Because I hate you 

#Iamtellingeveryone”. 

Clearly, Facebook showed what we have 

been telling everyone forever! That they 

hate us. When no one is looking they call 

us fag, disgusting. And BTW it’s not just 

us, they do it to YOU too when you’re not 

looking, because of your color, your economic 

statues, race anything. But they also 

bashed us, tied us to a fence and left to die 

alone, they make laws to hurt us, they walk 

to a bar and shoot us. Remember, gays 

pop out of racist and bigots too and worse 

homophobes, they carry those notions into 

adulthood and they become conflicted, 

angry and quite often lost. Sometimes they 

become radicalized and then do something 

crazy. 

When our leaders talk about mental health, 

I say, get on that bus, now! Because we are 

one crazy lot of people. If we really look 

at it are going to need a bigger looney 

bin. This world is so crazy it often takes 

a level 9 crazy episode before someone 

suggests “you need help.” I am not sure 

but bomb building and weapon stockpiling 

are signs too. Signs for others, 

because you have already snapped! The 

truth is the troubled person is the least 

likely person to determine mental health, 

as the homeless person to help them-

fight back! The existence of KKK, ISIS and 

any other fanatical group maintain a stable 

presence combined with gun control issues 

and presidential elections are freely debatable 

to prove one point. It proves that millions 

of insanely troubled people out there. 

But help is coming, and a sea change is 

happening. One of the major developments 

are Gay Alliances and gays in the military 

taking hold. Each year thousands of service 

men have sensitivity training on racism, 

homosexuality and bigotry of all kinds. 

People like Thommi Clinton and others are 

teaching complicated issues such as gender 

bias awareness and a host of related issues 

to civic municipalities. 

As we learn through all of this, is simply 

that all but a small few truly want everyone 

to live and peace and happiness. And 

we must continue to keep our hearts open 

to all we meet and develop reasonable 

response to both mental and physical space 

of others, without irrational judgment. 

While social network can show us at our 

worst we can see our best, as we see “my 

coming out story” now being told by children 

rather then retired men.

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

We awoke Sunday to the horrific news of 

the Orlando shooting. So much loss of life 

and bloodshed for no reason other than a 

warped sense of religion 

I was encouraged at the statements from 

the national conference of Islam condemning 

the attack and standing in solidarity 

with the LGBT community. 

In the absence of the Mayor, I was able to 

direct flags in Cathedral City to half staff 

early in the morning to honor those who 

were killed. Many folks wanted us to hold 

a vigil and we were able to direct them to 

Palm Springs so there would be one large 

event that could adequately remember 

the fallen and still be able to provide security. 

We had two council members there 

as well as our City Manager 

Our community has, unfortunately, had 

many episodes where we have shown the 

world how to unify and come together. 

This is the latest. We must show our 

strength and our ability to show love and 

respect for all people. Blood donations 

are still needed and for those here I the 

desert, financial contributions can be sent 

through crowd source and go fund me 

pages 

Orlando has openly gay city commissioner,

Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral 

City. He has made his name in governmental circles 

as an expert in transportation issues and is very active 

in working on bringing passenger rail service to the 

COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay 

elected city council members In Riverside County. He 

has served on the boards of the National League of 

Cities and the League of California Cities and as President 

of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
