THE ART OF POINTILLISM AND BODY DECORATING 

During the late 1800’s European artists were 

experimenting with various ways to demonstrate 

how light gives impressions of what we see. This 

varied group of French artists came to be called 

Impressionists. Georges Seurat and Paul Segel 

were the two most prominent artists who worked 

with pointillism. Vincent Van Gogh also did a self 

portrait in 1887 using pointillism. 

The technique of pointillism used the science of 

blending pigment colors. The common way was 

to put two or more colors on a pallet then mixing 

them together to attain a desired second color. 

The French word for dot is point. What these artist 

did was to use small dots of color placed close 

together to achieve what appeared to be a second 

color when viewed from a nominal distance. the 

eye of the beholder created the mixed color. For 

example to achieve the color green small dots or 

points of yellow and blue would be placed close 

together to give the illusion of green. The same 

for orange, using yellow and red, violet or purple 

using blue and red, etc. It was the pigment color 

wheel with red, yellow and blue as the primary 

colors mixing them with each other to achieve 

virtually all other colors. White and black would 

be added to provide for lighter shades of pastel or 

darker shades of the initial color.

technical pen creating various geometric or graphic 

shapes. An example of his work is included in

of body tattooing. If you have ever had a tattoo 

you know that they are created 

typically using a machine with eight needles 

at once each one penetrating the skin. Initially 

tattoos were created by an artist using one needle 

dot by dot with excruciating pain after each one.

Palm Springs Gay Softball League Holds Clinics for New Players in Preparation for New Season 

The Palm Springs Gay Softball League (PSGSL) is inviting anybody interested in learning more about the 

league to come to one of the league’s new player clinics. 

The clinics will be held on Sunday, September 11, and Sunday, September 18. Both clinics run from 9 to 11 

a.m. at Demuth Park’s Field No. 5, located in Palm Springs on Mesquite Avenue, just east of El Cielo Road. 

(Park in the lot at Nueva Vista Drive and Mesquite Avenue.) 

These clinics are open to anybody—not just members of the LGBT community—who is at least 18 years old. 

At these clinics, experienced coaches will offer information about the league and assess potential players’ skill 

levels, to make sure everyone is matched with an appropriate team. 

“We have teams for everyone, from beginners to players with a ton of experience,” says Ross Benson, the 

commissioner of the PSGSL. “As long as you can have fun, you’re welcome.” 

Benson suggests that potential players come to the clinics dressed appropriately, and that they bring water. 

The fall season kicks off Sunday, Oct. 2. All games are played on Sundays at Big League Dreams in Cathedral 

City.

Fractured dysfunctional hIS-story INVENTIONS 

Play-Doh: One smell most people remember from their childhood is the 

odor of Play-Doh, the brightly colored, non-toxic modeling clay. It was accidentally 

invented in 1955 by Joeseph and Noah McVicker while they were 

trying to make a wallpaper cleaner. It was marketed a year later by Rainbow 

Crafts. More than 700 million pounds of Play-Doh have sold since then, but 

the recipe remains a secret.Recently a presidential candidate was criticized 

for handing out Play-Doh, but we suspect he fancied the yellow color hat 

matched his hair. 

Fireworks: Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years ago, and legend 

has it that they were accidentally invented by a cook who mixed together 

charcaoal, sulfur, and saltpetter - all items commonly found in kitchens in 

those days. The mixture burned, and when it was compressed in a bamboo 

tube, it exploded. There’s no record of whether it was the cook’s last day on 

the job. I wonder about the gastronomical explosion he was trying to cook 

up. Perhaps exploding wind cakes. They leave you with a BANG! 


THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

It’s been a quiet week in the desert, thankfully, but 

not so much nationally as the Trump debacle continues. 

A few days of focused messages and then 

backtracking on his “throw all the foreigners out” 

and to top it off his new campaign CEO is found 

to be a wife beater and anti-Semite! Does he even 

attempt to vet his staff? One really has to wonder 

who would be in his cabinet and HIS Supreme 

Court justices???? God help us all. 

The Presidential debates begin very soon. Anticipation 

is high as to how each candidate will do 

– the circus barker and the former Senator and 

Secretary of State. I pity the moderator. But should 

make for must see TV. 

Cathedral City candidate forums are being scheduled. 

The obligatory right-of-passage with the 

Desert Sun and also at the Cathedral City Senior 

Center and one with the Chamber of Commerce 

at the Mary Pickford Theater. The Senior Center 

and Chamber forums are open to the public. 

Senior Center at 5:30pm on Tuesday, September 

13 (37171 W. Buddy Rogers Drive – across from 

the Bell Tower) and the Chamber of Commerce at 

Wednesday, October 5th at 11:30am. Here’s your 

opportunity to hear where the candidates stand on 

the issues. 

On Tuesday October 30, the valley will be host to a 

group from Sacramento called the Strategic Growth 

Council. This is the body that disperses all of the 

cap & trade funding to projects to help clean the air. 

New legislation calls for even stricter implementation 

of clean air laws for another 40% reduction 

in pollutants. I will be speaking on our plans for 

passenger rail service from here to Los Angeles via 

San Bernardino, Riverside and Anaheim to get cars 

off the road and my colleague, John Aguilar will 

be taking the group on a tour of housing projects, 

mostly in the eastern valley in hopes of getting 

money for transit programs to help promote a 

jobs/housing balance. Should be interesting. In 

the three years so far of the program, Riverside 

has only gotten one project funded and that was in 

Riverside, so we are making a big push this time. 

A fun and good for your health effort is underway 

in the valley. It called Nine valley cities walks with 

friends. It is sponsored by the United Way of the 

Desert and is geared as leading up to the annual 

Palm Springs Tram Race/Walk and the Desert 

AIDS Project walk. Each Saturday morning folks 

gather at 7am to walk anywhere from 1 – 3 miles 

to enjoy each other and get moving! The last two 

were in Desert Hot Springs and Cathedral City. 

Following walks are; Sept. 3 in Indio at Indio High, 

Sept 10 at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells, Sept 

17 in Coachella at Rancho Las Flores Park, Sept 24 

in Rancho Mirage at Westin Mission Hills, Oct 1 in 

Palm Springs at the Aerial Tram Road, Oct 8 in La 

Quinta at the Wellness Center to LQ Trail and Oct. 

15 in Palm Desert at the Living Desert. The Tram 

Road Challenge 6K and DAP Walk are Oct. 22. It’s 

free so come join in! 

Speaking of healthy effort, I broke down and joined

I didn’t do it now I never would. I booked a trainer 

3X a week. I call him a sadist, but he is actually very 

good and sweet, Raul Silva. He is straight but great 

on the eyes. And I go two other days of the week for 

cardio. I’ve been at it two months now and while I 

don’t see a change, my scale sure notices it! Good 

practice I guess for the door-to-door campaigning 

I have to do. We will see how things go. That’s it 

for this week. Stay tuned! More fun on the way, 

I’m sure. 

Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral 

City. He has made his name in governmental circles 

as an expert in transportation issues and is very active 

in working on bringing passenger rail service to the 

COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay 

elected city council members In Riverside County. He 

has served on the boards of the National League of 

Cities and the League of California Cities and as President 

of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
