MAXSON ART STUDIO & GAL- 

LERY FEATURES “HIDDEN 

ALLURE” MIXED MEDIA SCULP- 

TURE THROUGH WINTER 2017 

Palm Springs, CA. – December 8, 2016 

– “Hidden Allure” a Ceramic, Bronze Finish, 

and Mixed Media Sculpture will be 

featured at Maxson Art Studio through 

winter 2017. The sculpture was inspired by 

observing everyday objects, both natural 

and manmade, whose beauty and intrigue 

are often overlooked by people as they pass 

by them every day. Among these objects, 

manhole covers and grates caught the 

attention of gallery owner Linda Maxson; 

the combination of design and the patina 

of everyday life were so intriguing. Linda 

wanted to somehow capture the beauty and 

deliver the message to “look beyond the 

obvious, not only in our surroundings, but 

in people as well”. Palm Springs provided 

“grate” inspiration and gave her a chance to 

pay tribute to the city and the people that 

gave her the encouragement, support and 

opportunity to open a gallery and share 

her work. The sculpture is made of fired 

paper clay, metal mesh, fiberglass and other 

mixed media. 

Thanks to Palm Springs Artist, Peggy Vermeer; 

through her creations with found 

objects, Peggy’s art inspired Linda to look 

beyond the obvious use of materials and 

have no boundaries. “Hidden Allure” will 

be on display throughout the 2016-2017 

winter season in Maxson Art Studio.

THE ART OF MANGA AND ANIME 

Manga is the Japanese word for comics. Manga 

started in Japan during the 1930’s. However, it 

has roots back to the 1870’s where it was a form 

of children’s literature. It evolved into manga- anime 

during World War II. Anime is the Japanese 

word for animation. Japan in the late 1930’s into 

the 1940’s was a militaristic nation. Citizens who 

did not conform to government restrictions were 

socially ostracized or put into government camps. 

Artist who had spent much of their careers criticizing 

the government either reversed to support 

the government, or found themselves in serious 

trouble. Those who capitulated were required to 

create cartoon strips that supported the militaristic 

propaganda and criticize the enemies of the 

nation. 

Manga has become a significant aspect of Japanese 

publishing since the 1950’s. Manga includes 

topics from action-adventure, historical drama, 

horror, mystery, romance, sexuality, and sports. 

Gay topics and sexuality have also become a 

major topics. The dollar value of Magna reached 

$4.5 million in 2010. Manga is translated and 

sold throughout the world, France, Canada and 

the United States making up the more significant 

markets. 

Following World War II, in Japan, a young 

cartoon artist named Osamu Tezuka, who as a 

youngster was a fan of Walt Disney’s early animation, 

developed his own original style. He created 

the animated character, “Tetsuwan Atomu” in 

English “Astro Boy”,produced by his own production 

company, Mushi Production in 1962. His 

success at animation and character creation gave 

him the title of the “Father of Manga and Anime”. 

Astro Boy came to the United States by 1963 and 

was shown as a cartoon series by NBC. 

Sailor Moon arrived in the early 1990’s Japanese 

anime. This is a popular series popular with 

children and adults, about a young school girl 

who evolves as a fantasy character fighting evil in 

a variety of ways with her cat, Luna. Her character 

and series of episodes became very popular 

in the U.S. and world wide. She also became an 

advocate icon for safe sex and the use of condoms 

in Japan and wherever the series was aired. There 

have been 3 films and at least 39 video games 

made around the adventures of Sailor Moon.

Back to the World War II years, during this time 

Walt Disney was struggling to create his own 

cartoon versions of manga and anime. Mickey 

Mouse and Oswald the Rabbit were two of his 

cartoon characters that became popular. Snow 

White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 1937 

as a feature length cartoon. The war slowed the 

progress of Disney but he continued to make two 

films during the 1940’s, “Dumbo”, and “Bambi”.

Introduction to the Geology of the 

Coachella Valley by Burt Boss 

On Thursday, December 15, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the UCCE Master Gardeners will 

present a free class on the fascinating and complex geology of the valley where we 

live and garden. The class, an “Introduction to the Geology of the Coachella Valley,” 

will be presented by Master Gardener Burt Boss at the Cathedral City Public Library. 

Burt’s love for his subject matter and his background as a knowledgeable docent and 

experienced hiker in the Coachella Valley shines through in this thoroughly enjoyable 

presentation. A flyer with more information is attached. 

The cooler days of the desert winter and early spring are a perfect time to explore the 

natural oases and other wonders of the Coachella Valley Preserve open 7 a.m. to 5 

p.m. through April, 2017 in Thousand Palms. The Preserve is located on the northern 

side of the Coachella Valley, at the foot of the Indio Hills. Within the Preserve 

is a large, rare desert wetland and two palm woodland oases. You can experience 

first-hand some of the effects on the local ecology of the infamous San Andreas Fault 

which runs along the Coachella Valley. Water from springs along the fault line feeds 

the ponds and creeks within the Preserve and supports the native palms and other 

plant life in the oases. Knowledgeable docents give tours of the oases and surrounding 

desert on a regular basis. Check the website “coachellavalleypreserve.org” for 

directions to the Preserve and information about the times and dates of the scheduled 

tours. There is no charge to visit the Preserve; donations are always welcome though.

helps to just start typing away, write 

whatever comes out of your soul, like 

I am now. I normally would write 

about my disgust for people these 

days and just what a bunch of assholes 

they can be, but I must curve 

into a new direction this week. 

I will talk about happy and positive 

things like....hmmmm. Okay. Well 

with everyone over reacting about 

everything, it’s tough to pick out the 

positive things in life. And after I 

typed that I thought, how sad that is! 

We are mostly a negative universe. 

Even Trump got half the votes, so why 

the negativity? You attract what you 

give out! I try to give as much good as 

I can stomach, but it’s a give and take. 

Not take and take. You are making my 

life difficult, but you don’t care, you 

constantly take and take. 

Stop taking. You don’t always end 

up with more. Plus, who says more 

is always better? I try to conduct my 

life as positive as I can, but you negative 

little fudge packers are ruining 

my vibe. Go away if that’s how you 

are going to play! And we will all be 

happy. I have a great life as long as the 

ants don’t invade my picnic. We will 

crush ants that crash my happiness. 

I don’t ask for much. Just to be happy 

in life and live a positive life. As 

humans, you must learn that we all 

have to share this planet, so let a few 

things roll off your shoulders. It’s easier 

in the long run. Also, less stressed 

people look younger! And darling I 

look marvelous! Absolutely Marvelous!!!

THAT IS FUNNY 

There were 3 guys who died on Christmas Eve & went to heaven. St. Peter at the gate said since “you 

all died on Christmas Eve you all got to show me something that represents Christmas.” First 

guy puts his hand in his pocket & pulls out a lighter lights it & said “Candle” St. Peter said “there 

are candles for Christmas go in”. Second guy pulls out a set of keys & shakes them saying “bells”. 

St. Peter said “there are bells for Christmas go in”. Third guy’s pockets were turned inside out 

“Well?” St. Peter said The guy puts his hand in his coat pocket & pulls out a man thong. St. Peter 

said “now what do they have to do with Christmas?” The guy said “Oh theses are jeffs....” 

On Christmas morning, a police on horseback had stopped for a while. A kid was beside him and the 

police said “Did Santa give you that bicycle.” The kid said yes. Then the police man said “Next time 

tell Santa to put a taillight on it.” He gave the kid a ticket for $20. Before the police left, the kid 

asked “Did Santa give you the horse?” The police, joking, said yes. Then the kid said “Next time, tell 

Santa to put the dick underneath the horse, not on top.” 

To all the people that piss me off, I hope you get Crocs for Christmas.

The “true love” mentioned in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” does not refer 

to a romantic couple, but the Catholic Church’s code for God. The person who 

receives the gifts represents someone who has accepted that code. For example, the 

“partridge in a pear tree” represents Christ. The “two turtledoves” represent the Old 

and New Testaments.

Here in Washington DC. 30 degrees yet 

with the heat coming from 500+ LGBT 

elected officials about the upcoming Trump 

Administration you wouldn’t know it 

We have had the opportunity to hear from 

US Senator Tammy Baldwin and many of 

the out members of Congress as well as 

elected officials from throughout the world 

Everyone is anxious to begin the resistance 

in the Capitol to our City Halls. Cathedral 

City in fact will be discussing ways to 

strengthen our support for our undocumented 

residents 

It is distressing to read about each new cabinet 

choice and how conservative they are, 

but we have been reminded that we have 

been through much worse with Reagan and 

HIV. We will get through Trump 

I will be back here in November with the 

National League of Cities and in May for the 

National Association of Realtors. It will be 

very interesting to get their gauge of things 

once the administration has been in office. 

Gays, cities and real estate professionals 

have had unprecedented access to the White 

House under President Obama. How things 

will change? Who knows yet, but I will be 

sure to report regularly. 

How best should we react locally? What 

issues are you concerned about? Immigration? 

Health? Education? Children’s 

issues? Let me know? I’ll know how best 

to research. 

Locally our city council’s are swearing in 

ew and returning council members. Indio 

and La Quinta have added their new folks. 

Cathedral City and Indian Wells this week. 

New faces. New ideas. New policies. What 

changes are in store for the residents and 

visitors? 

Many folks have an idea that all of the LGBT 

people reside in Palm Springs and Cathedral 

City. We know that is a fallacy. But where 

do you live? Let me know. What issues do u 

for see? What would you like to see? 

Do you have transportation concerns? Are 

there stores or restaurants you want to see 

open in the valley? 

In the 35 years I have lived here so much has 

changed and yet so much is the same. We 

are still the same small town just with more 

people, more noise, more traffic!
