our passion for science and a call to support 

and safeguard the scientific community. 

Recent policy changes have caused 

heightened worry among scientists, and the 

incredible and immediate outpouring of 

support has made clear that these concerns 

are also shared by hundreds of thousands 

of people around the world. Mischaracterization 

of science as a partisan issue, 

which has given policymakers permission 

to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical 

and urgent matter. It is time for people 

who support scientific research and evidence-based 

policies to take a public stand 

and be counted.

Well in the Desert update 

Hi everyone............. 

The Well is not closed; we are just mobile now. We are not letting losing our office 

building defeat or demoralize us, we are rising way above and actually increasing our 

services. We have gone mobile and you will see our vans out early in the morning 

serving coffee and sweet rolls, water and fruit, along with needed articles of clothing 

and more to those homeless and on the streets, and you will see our vans out picking 

people up from downtown and other places to take to hot meals we still have daily at 

our church sites. We are expanding these services to include Saturday’s and Sunday’s. 

We are in the process of figuring out the best way of offering mobile shower services 

and that will be down the road a piece. And we are confident that those from the City 

who have said help is on the way will help find a building that will serve as a cooling 

center during the grueling summer days. If you have donations we will pick up; 

please call us at (760) 656-8905, and please be patient if it is not for a couple of days 

for us to get to you. If you see people out there on the streets who need help please 

call Bryan at (760) 835-8466, or me, at (760) 323-8353 and we will dispatch someone

OPERA IN THE PARK - OUTDOOR MUSIC 2017 

On Sunday, April 9,The 19th annual Opera In 

the Park was performed at Sunrise Park in Palm 

Springs. This is the 49th year of the existence of 

the Palm Springs Opera Guild. The Guild was 

formed in 1968. The French coloratura soprano, 

Lil Pons was the co-founder. The mission of the 

Guild is to bring opera-themed events to the 

Coachella Valley throughout the year. 

One of the Guild’s missions is to provide student 

outreach to students throughout the area 

schools. This year about 17,000 students will be 

introduced to opera music to help them appreciate 

this unique form of musical storytelling. 

Another major event sponsored by the Guild 

is the Vocal Competition which provides the 

opportunity for local students to compete for 

scholarships. Many of the former competition 

participants are singing with opera companies 

throughout the world. This year the scholarships 

will total nearly $45,000. It will be held at 

the Helene Galen Performing Arts Center at the 

new Rancho Mirage High School. 

The Guild also offers a number of Prime Time 

Outreach lectures and performances during the 

year in conjunction with the Rancho Mirage Library. 

The primary event is Opera In The Park 

which is a free concert performed at Sunrise 

Park and open to everyone to enjoy excerpts 

from historical operas performed by a professional 

orchestra and upcoming opera singers 

from various locations. 

The musical director for Opera In The Park is 

Mona Lands. Recently retired from the UCLA 

Music Department after 24 years, she has 

worked 10 years with the Palm Springs event 

in planning and directing. The Conductor for 

Opera In The Park is Valery Ryvkin. Born in 

Russia, he has become one of the most respected 

opera conductors in the United States. He is 

a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory 

and the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the 

prestigious Juilliard School. 

The female singers featured in this year’s 

production include, Anina Edris from the San 

Fransico Opera; Jacquelynne Fontaine, from a 

world tour of over one thousand performances 

of “Phantom of the Opera”; Madison Leonard 

from a variety of venues, most recently, Opera 

Idaho: Guadalupe Paz, also from performing 

a variety of venues. The male singers include 

Ricardo Garcia, currently a student at the San 

Fransico Conservatory of Music; Marcus Klotz, 

a recent graduate of Pepperdine University, 

Vocal Performances; Joshua Wheeker, recently 

with Opera Iowa, and the DeMoines Metro 

Opera; Ben Lowe, with a Masters in Music from 

UCLA, will be performing the role of Dulcamar 

in the “Elixir of Love”, Music Academy of the 

West during this coming summer.

next year which will be the 50th anniversary 

of the Palm Springs Opera Guild and the 20th 

year of the performance of Opera In the Park.

GABLE SLEPT HERE, opening Friday, May 5,

Easter in America. The Prez must be golfing 

(again) as the Twitter feed has been quiet. 

Though earlier this week it appeared we were 

going to start another war – this time with 

North Korea. I do think the man forgets that 

Congress must declare war. Of course, I think 

he forgets or doesn’t know a lot. But you must 

realize that if you read this column 

The Supreme took his seat this week. Only time 

will tell if he is jaded like Scalia or his own man 

and votes various ways like Justice Kennedy. 

Speaking of the President’s golf game, he now in 

just 12 weeks has taken more time off then President 

Obama did in a whole year. Security costs 

at Mar – A – Lago in Florida are skyrocketing 

to the point that the city and county are trying 

to get the Federal Government to back fill. It is 

literally breaking their budgets. 

Tax Day came with thousands of demonstrators 

on the street demanding that the President 

release his taxes. Something that every Prez 

has done since Nixon. Don’t hold your breath. 

Also – FLASH! – he is now refusing to release 

the White House visitor’s logs. Obama released 

his for all 8 years on a regular basis. What does 

this man have to hide? 

Steve Bannion looks like he is on his way out. 

The son-in-law has spoken. The press secretary 

stumbles his way into defending Adolph Hitler 

– we know his days are numbered. Who is in 

charge? 

Really makes you long for the days of Gerald 

Ford and George H.W Bush. You have no idea 

how hard that is for me to write! 

Locally, Cathedral City will be finalizing their 

tax structure on marijuana facilities on the 

28th. Also, in 2018 city council members will be 

elected by district. You can go online at www. 

cathedralcity.gov and use the online tool to 

draw your own maps and see if you can come up 

with a good idea and submit it. The seats that 

will be up are for Stan Henry, Mark Carnevale 

and Shelley Kaplan. Should be an interesting 

exercise AND election. 

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians 

have announced that their third casino will 

be in Cathedral City on 12 acres of land they 

purchased from the Community Urban Revitalization 

Corp. at the corner of East Palm Canyon 

and Date Palm (where the Carl’s Jr. sits) This 

will be a significant boost to the city’s efforts for 

a walking, living downtown area. The Coachella 

Valley Repertory Theater and the Mary 

Pickford Theaters on the West and the casino 

on the east. I can envision shops, cafes, bars, 

coffee houses open until 1 or 2am unlike some 

of our neighboring communities that roll up the 

streets at 7pm.

made his name in governmental circles 

as an expert in transportation 

issues and is very active in working 

on bringing passenger rail service to 

the COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the 

first openly gay elected city council 

members In Riverside County. He has 

served on the boards of the National 

League of Cities and the League of 

California Cities and as President of 

the Southern CA Association of Governments.
