In recent years a growing realisation has emerged among professionals and in the
academy that many seemingly intractable conflicts are driven by a complex of interacting
causal factors and processes that need to be considered and addressed
together, if long-term stability, freedom from want and freedom from fear are to
be realized. Particularly the growing challenges posed by global environmental
and climate change threaten to trigger a rapid escalation and proliferation of conflicts
in different parts of the world, including the West, as competition over access
to resources intensifies, while supplies of essential commodities dwindle and
global population numbers continue to rise. Internationally, this emergent paradigm
has come to be known as a Human Security approach.
Rather than a sectoral approach, deploying technical expertise on, e.g., natural resource
management, education or health issues, the Human Security programme
analyzes the complex of factors and processes that impinge upon any given conflict.
Addressing the root causes of instability, insecurity and poverty therefore
requires a different set of skills and knowledge, a different perspective and approach,
than that provided by traditional disciplinary expertise. A Master in Human
Security provides these skills and competences.
About the Programme
In the Human Security programme, you will study:
- Human Security: Core Concepts and Theories
- Human Security Research Methods
- Elective Subject
- Conflict Dynamics and Management
- Thesis
Teaching varies between lectures and classroom instruction. In addition, there is
often project work together with other students. Students are encouraged to participate
in class discussions.
