in each case. Of the latter, the forestry and
environmental conservation authorities should
be noted in particular. The number of
invitations sent was between 10 and 300,
depending on how many owners were
concerned.
At the negotiations, there was a
presentation introducing the Roman Limes, the
areas of it that had already been inscribed in the
World Heritage and the goals of the project, as
well as the sites concerning the given
community. After this, we answered questions
and asked for the opinions of those present.
With the exception of four cases, the project
received full support everywhere. Of these four
towns, the opinion of the owners was
categorically negative in only one (Kisoroszi),
while in the other three (Dunakeszi, Szentendre
and Tahitótfalu) conditions were formulated
which could be negotiated in the future. An
official record was prepared of the negotiations,
which can be found in the archives of the
National Office of Cultural Heritage amongst
the other documentation for the project.
In Budapest, on account of the
unmanageably large number of property
owners, a different procedure was employed.
We introduced the plans to the district head
architects, and then requested the position of
the local government council in an official
letter. Of the five districts, so far three have
sent us their resolutions in support of the
project, and we are waiting for the others. When
and if these arrive, we will inform the owners
through the aid of local media (the press, TV
and a website).
2.1.5. The protection of the individual sites on the
basis of Hungarian law
In Hungary, Law LXIV of 2001 on the
preservation of cultural heritage provides for
the protection of World Heritage, archeological
and historic sites. The sites selected all fall
under this protection, and there are some that
enjoy additional protection as well. On the basis
of this law, a given site is placed within the
following categories of protection according to
its character:
Archeological sites
• National significance (through a ministerial
decree)
• Regional significance (through a ministerial
decree)
• General significance (through a National
Office of Cultural Heritage resolution)
Historic
• Monument
• Historic district
• Historic surroundings
The National Office of Cultural Heritage’s
register contains the level that the sites
correspond to in the aforementioned categories
of protection. In every case we indicated the
National Office of Cultural Heritage register
number for the individual sites.
In addition to this, there are other types of
protection, for example environmental
conservation or local (declared by the local
government).
2.1.6. The documentation
Detailed documentation has been prepared
for the sites described for nomination. For
included elements see Chapter 2.2.4. and 3.
