Eine Tabatiere, eine meist kunstvolle Dose zum Erhalt von<br />
Schnupftabak, erfreute sich im 18. Jahrhundert größter Beliebtheit.<br />
Gewiss hatte der getriebene Kosmopolit Giacomo<br />
Casanova (1725–1798) selbst eine feine Dose dieser Art. Als<br />
Casanova im Alter von 16 Jahren betrunken von der Kanzel<br />
in San Samuele stürzte, konnte nur noch eine besondere Karriere<br />
folgen. Seine Abenteuer führten den König aller Libertins<br />
sogar nach Dresden, war doch seine Mutter Giovanna hier als<br />
Operndiva engagiert und sein Bruder Giovanni gar Direktor<br />
der Kunstakademie. Auch wenn Giacomo sich selbst als<br />
„Casanova“ des Barock erschaffen hatte, so hinterließ der Venezianer<br />
mit seinen „Memoiren“ Weltliteratur und erlaubt uns<br />
einen köstlichen Einblick in das Leben Europas seiner Zeit. Diese<br />
reich bemalte <strong>Meissener</strong> Tabatiere (frühes 18. Jh.) führt ein<br />
Doppelleben, außen elegant venezianisch, doch innen lässt sie<br />
Casanova, ganz lust- und kunstvoll zum Verführer werden.<br />

Giacomo Casanova (1725–1798), that most driven of cosmopol-<br />
itan characters, is sure to have owned one. Following his inebriated<br />
fall from the pulpit in San Samuele at the age of 16, it<br />
had to be a rather special career that Casanova would pursue.<br />
The adventures of this king of all libertines even took him to<br />
Dresden, where his mother Giovanna worked as an opera diva<br />
and his brother Giovanni was actually the Director of the Art<br />
Academy. Despite Giacomo inventing himself as the “Casanova”<br />
of the Baroque, the Venetian also passed down his<br />
“Memoirs”, serious literature that affords us exquisite insights<br />
into European life at the time. This extravagantly decorated<br />
Meissen snuffbox (early C18) leads a double life – elegantly<br />
Venetian on the outside, whilst the inside ably and lustily<br />
depicts Casanova as the grand seducer.<br />
