► DIE KASBAH
An der nördlichsten Stelle von Tanger
liegt die im 17. Jahrhundert erbaute
Kasbah: eine Festung bestehend aus
ineinander verschachtelten Gassen und
Plätzen. Europäer und reiche Marokkaner
haben dort in den vergangenen
Jahren alte Häuser, Paläste und Riads
– traditionelle, marokkanische Häuser
mit innen gelegenen Höfen oder Gärten
– zu luxuriösen Apartments, Hotels und
Restaurants umgebaut.
► THE KASBAH
At the northernmost end of the town,
where Africa almost touches Europe, lies
the walled city – the Kasbah – which
consists of narrow, maze-like streets,
alleys, squares and open spaces. In recent
years Europeans and wealthy Moroccans
have converted many of its old houses,
palaces and riads (the traditional
Moroccan house or palace with an interior
garden or courtyard) into luxury
apartments, hotels and restaurants.

► DER AUSBLICK
Von einer Terrasse in der Kasbah hat
man eine gute Aussicht auf die Häuser
der Stadt. Viele Riads in der Festung haben
ihre Dächer als Terrassen ausgebaut
und servieren dort abends marokkanische
Tajines und frischen Minztee. Von
den Dächern aus hat man einen Ausblick
über das Meer und über den Stadtteil
Ville Nouvelle, der in den 20er bis 40er
Jahren erbaut wurde und der südlich der
Kasbah liegt.

► THE VIEW
There is a fantastic view of the city’s
rooftops from the terraces of the Kasbah.
Many riads have transformed their roofs to
serve Moroccan tajines and fresh mint tea
in the evenings. In the far distance, on the
outskirts of the city, you can see the tower
blocks. North of the Kasbah is the sea. To
the south lies the district of Ville Nouvelle,
which dates back to the 1920s. At its
centre sits the Place de France, a hotspot
for Tangier’s middle class.
