Successful together: three fiber producers contributed their know-how to the joint venture.

Developed in record time
now the joint venture partners are capable of manufacturing
sophisticated, flawless and extremely resilient fibers which
are equivalent to those of the established market leaders in
several carbon fiber categories, e.g. for wind turbines. it took
about one year for the joint venture to take shape, and another
two years for the product to be matured into a competitive fiber.
David Hoyland, managing Director of the subsidiary Lenzing
plastics and project leader praised the fact that “it was a
phenomenal achievement to reach this level in only two years,
even more so if you consider that our main competitors from
Japan have already been in this business for over 20 years.”
He is convinced that it is very interesting for both businessstrategic
and political reasons to have the Kelheim site as the
only production location in Europe for this fundamental technology.
The entire investment amounted to about Eur 50 mill.,
with the current production line accounting for an annual production
capacity of approx. 5,000 tons.
Consistently high quality for a future product
Following a very successful start-up phase, the production
line is expected to operate in 2011 at full capacity, which now
amounts to a good 5,000 tons annually. “i am proud that we
have achieved a consistently high quality and can guarantee
very good strength values – and all this after a very short development
time. This was also confirmed by our partner SgL,”
says Epg managing Director Luis puncernau-garcia. “We are
confident of our ability to open up new areas of application
on the carbon fiber market and strengthen our market position,”
states Dr. richard neuert, managing Director of the SgL
group. Konrad brunner, production manager of Epg, praises
that “everyone pulled in the same direction. Such a project
can only be realized in this period of time by joining forces.”
In Rekordzeit entwickelt
nun sind die Joint-Venture-partner in der Lage, anspruchsvolle,
fehlerfreie und extrem standhafte Fasern herzustellen, die
gleichwertig sind mit jenen der etablierten Marktführer für einige
Carbonfaser-Kategorien wie etwa für Windturbinen. Der Aufbau
des Joint Ventures dauerte dabei etwa ein Jahr, in weiteren zwei
Jahren wurde das produkt zu einer konkurrenzfähigen Faser
entwickelt. „Es war eine phänomenale Leistung, dass wir dieses
niveau innerhalb von zwei Jahren erreicht haben. insbesondere
wenn man bedenkt, dass unsere Hauptkonkurrenten aus Japan
bereits seit mehr als 20 Jahren in diesem Geschäft tätig
sind“, lobt David Hoyland, Geschäftsführer der Lenzing Tochter
plastics und projektverantwortlicher. nach seiner Überzeugung
ist es wirtschaftsstrategisch und politisch sehr interessant, den
standort Kelheim für diese wichtige Technologie als einzigen
produktionsort in Europa zu haben. Das gesamte investitionsvolumen
beträgt etwa 50 Mio. Eur, die jährliche produktionskapazität
der aktuellen Linie liegt bei gut 5.000 to.
Hohe Qualitätskonstanz für ein Zukunftsprodukt
Für das Jahr 2011 erwartet man nach einer sehr erfolgreichen
Anfahrphase eine volle Auslastung der Linie, die nunmehr eine
jährliche produktionskapazität von gut 5.000 to aufweist. Luis
puncernau-Garcia, Geschäftsführer der EpG: „ich bin stolz,
dass wir mit dieser Anlage eine hohe Qualitätskonstanz und
sehr gute Festigkeitswerte garantieren können – und das nach
dieser sehr kurzen Entwicklungszeit. Dies bestätigt auch unser
partner sGL.“ Dr. richard neuert, Managing Director der sGL
Group: „Wir sind zuversichtlich, neue Einsatzgebiete im Carbonfasermarkt
erschließen und unsere Marktposition stärken zu
können.“ Konrad Brunner als production Manager der EpG lobt:

in dieser zeit nur mit vereinten Kräften zu realisieren.“
