stammt wohl der überwiegende Teil des veröff entlichten Materials. Zahlreiche Tafeln wurden aus den
Werken von Salvani, Rondelet u.a. kopiert. ‚Th e work begins with an introductory essay on the defi nition
of a fi sh: Ray rejected previous defi nitions that had indiscriminately encompassed all types of water-living
animals, but did include cetaceans with fi shes despite their obvious affi nities with viviparous quadrupeds.
Th is essay is followed by others discussing the anatomy and physiology of fi shes: Ray affi rmed that fi shes
could hear, wrote extensively on the air-bladder, gave an account of the reproductive organs and denied
that fi sh could reproduce through spontaneous generation. He rejected Rondelet‘s classifi cation by locality
in favor of Aristotle‘s system of Cetacei, Cartilaginei and Spinosi, which he then subdivided.‘ (Norman
