(washingtonpost) United States Central Intelligence Director David Petraeus
began a two-day mission to Cairo on Wednesday for a two-day visit for
security and counter-terrorism talks, Egyptian officials said.
Petraeus is leading a U.S. delegation that will meet with top Egyptian
security officials to exchange information about combating terrorism, the
officials said.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not
authorized to speak to reporters. A U.S. Embassy spokesman declined to give
information about the visit.
The visit comes as Egypt is clamping down on suspected militants.
Morocco 'dismantles terrorist cell'
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(bbc) Morocco says it has dismantled a terrorist cell that planned to set
up a training camp in the Rif mountains.
The interior ministry said police had arrested nine suspects and seized
several items, including black flags symbolising al-Qaeda.
Officials said the nine were caught following the arrests of two "militant
Salafists" near Rabat in October.
Algeria roots out al-Qaida in last mountain refuge
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(washingtonpost) Weary from years of kidnappings, the inhabitants of
Algeria’s rugged Kabylie mountains are finally turning against the al-Qaida
fighters in their midst and helping security forces hunt them down. And
that turnaround is giving Algeria its best chance yet to drive the terror
network from its last Algerian stronghold.
While defeated in much of the rest of the country, al-Qaida in the Islamic
Maghreb remains active in the Kabylie, partly because the Berbers there,
the region’s original inhabitants before the arrival of the Arabs, have
long been deeply hostile to the central government and refused to provide
information on militant whereabouts or activity.
