Vulnerability of Electric Power System Assessed by CRS<br />

(fas) The U.S. electric power system is vulnerable to a variety of threats,<br />
from natural disasters to operational errors to sabotage or terrorist<br />
attack, a newly disclosed report (b) from the Congressional Research<br />
Service says.<br />
Over the years there have actually been tens of thousands of recorded<br />
attacks on electric power targets, CRS notes, but usually due to “mischief”<br />
and with limited or no consequences.<br />
“Most commo<strong>nl</strong>y, electric outages are caused by use of a weapon to shoot out<br />
transformers or use of simple tools to take down transmission towers.”<br />

Intelligence Spending Drops for a Second Year<br />

(fas) For the second year in a row and for o<strong>nl</strong>y the second time in the<br />
post-9/11 era, total intelligence spending (b) declined last year to $75.4<br />
billion, according to figures released yesterday (c) by the Director of<br />
National Intelligence and the Department of Defense (Bloomberg, Wash Times,<br />
Reuters).<br />
Total spending had peaked in FY2010 at $80.1 billion, and declined in<br />
FY2011 to $78.6 billion.<br />
