Somalia's General Farah killed in al-Shabab ambush<br />

(bbc) A top Somali military commander has been killed in an ambush - the<br />
first general to be killed by the Islamists.<br />
Mohamed Ibrahim Farah, nicknamed "Gordon", was killed near Merca, a<br />
strategic town captured from the al-Shabab militants in August.<br />
The Somali government army and African Union troops have been battling the<br />
al-Qaeda-aligned group for several years.<br />
Al-Shabab has withdrawn from several key towns in recent months, but still<br />
controls much of the countryside.<br />

Somalia: Mogadishu suicide bombers attack restaurant<br />

(bbc) Two suicide bombers have blown themselves up trying to enter a<br />
restaurant in the Somali capital Mogadishu, killing at least one person.<br />
They had targeted a restaurant known as The Village in the Hodan district<br />
of the city but were stopped by guards, one of whom was killed.<br />
The attackers opened fire on the guards, a local resident told Reuters.<br />

Kaduna church hit in Nigeria suicide bomb attack<br />

(bbc) At least seven people have been killed and dozens injured in a<br />
suicide bombing during Mass at a Catholic church in northern Nigeria,<br />
officials say.<br />
An explosive-laden vehicle drove into the church and detonated its load,<br />
ripping a hole in the wall and roof.<br />
The attack happened in Kaduna, which has been targeted by Islamist militant<br />
group Boko Haram in the recent past.<br />
President Goodluck Jonathan promised to "redouble" his government's efforts<br />
to tackle terrorism and violence.<br />
