SAINT PETER AND PAUL’S
CHURCH – TWORKÓW
A Baroque parish church of Saint Peter and
Paul is a monument of outstanding standard.
It was erected in the years 1691-1694 and designed by
Jan Zeller from Opava. In the interior a beautiful stucco
decoration of Antoni Signo from Opava (1961) has been
preserved, above an organ – loft there is a painting
presenting the Last Judgement, a balcony from the late
17th century as well as a high altar with a wealth of wood
– carving ornament from the same period and a painting
„Feeding the crowds”. In the temple there is an exhibition
of eleven decorated coffins and sarcophagi of local magnates
from Reiswitz and Wilczek families. The exhibition
is unique in Europe. The exhibits come from the crypt
under the place reserved for women that was opened in
1993. In a richly decorated sarcophagus with gilt elements,
Ewa, born Wilczek, was buried (she lived in the
years 1613-1655). In a tin – lead one her husband was laid.
Other coffins are ornamented with rich oil wall – painting,
with gilt in most cases. Clothes found in the graves are
of high value; among them a belt – bound little costume
of Jerzy Wilhelm (died in 1683) which resembles a Polish
nobleman’s national costume and a little dress of Klara
Ludwika. The whole collection is distinguishable among
similar ones that have been preserved in Poland (Wawel,
Brzeżany, Brzeg, Legnica, Złotów, Sieraków) and Europe
(Vienna, Munich). This is the only really big collection of
children’s sarcophagi in Poland.
The church is open during services, visits are allowed
after receiving the parson’s agreement +48 32 419
