BAILDON’S PALACE
– POGRZEBIEŃ
The palace was built in the first half of the 19th
century, at first it was one-storey and between
the years 1885 and 1886 it was rebuilt by the then owner
Alexander von Baildon, a rich industrialist from Upper
Silesia. One storey was added at that time, with white marble
stairs leading there. The front elevation was designed
in the Italian villa style. In 1930 the decayed palace was
taken by Salesian order. The building was renovated and
the interior was adapted to the needs of the Salesian seminary.
During World War II Germans set up a camp here,
among others for Polish children (Polenlager). After the war
the palace was taken by Salesian Sisters who organized a
monastery there. The building is surrounded by a park.
In the convent was a Servant of God, sister Laura Meozzi
(1873-1951) a candidate to be beatified. Her grave is at the
local parish St. Bartholomew Church. Pogrzebień was the
place where Alojza Luiza von Larisch came from, wife of
Joseph von Eichendorff, a famous German Romantic poet.
Eichendorff’s walks in the forest called Widok in Brzezie
are marked with a stone standing by the forest. Pogrzebień
is situated on a hill. In its southern part at the road to
Lubomia a beautiful view stretches out over the Odra valley
and the Moravian Gate, the natural passage between
mountain ranges: Carpathians and Sudetes.
