TRACING EICHENDORFF
– ŁUBOWICE
In the 9th – 6th century B.C. the area of the
village was occupied by a town from the late
bronze age and early iron age, its area was about 25 hectares.
It was the biggest known town in the Polish lands, able
to shelter one thousand people, it was surrounded by a 9
- meter high, 2,5 - kilometre long wood – earth rampart.
It was destroyed in the first half of the 6th century, most
probably by the invasion of nomads from the steppes by
the Black Sea. Near the parish church there are ruins of a
one – floor, Baroque palace, which was built in 1786, and
thoroughly reconstructed in Neogothic style about 1860,
and destroyed in 1945. The foundation is surrounded by
a park with numerous valuable old trees. A famous poet
of Romanticism, Joseph von Eichendorff, was born in that
palace. He was the author of novels, stories and plays as
well as the famous story „From the Life of a Good – for
– Nothing”. In the nearby cemetery there are graves of
his parents and siblings. In the Joseph von Eichendorff
Culture and Meeting Centre in Upper Silesia here there
is a museum devoted to primeval finds and the poet’s memory
room. In the neighbouring Łubowice you can visit a
reconstructed, the so-called Eichendorff’s windmill from
the 19th century which belonged to the father of the poet’s
beloved.
