THE CASTLE AND THE OLD MILL
– TWORKÓW
The castle in Tworków, preserved as a ruin at
present, is an old medieval stronghold, once
surrounded by a moat, rebuilt in a Renaissance style in
the second half of the 16th century. At the turn of the 16th
and 17th century the castle was given Baroque features, and
in the years 1872-1874 it was given a Renaissance style in
accordance with an architect Heidenreich’s design. The
building burnt down in 1931. In the beginning of the 19th
century a poet Joseph von Eichendorff used to pay many
visits to his uncle here. Due to its gloomy atmosphere he
would call the castle „an owl’s nest”. According to a legend,
there is a secret underground passage to Saint Urban’s
Church. At Młyńska Street, by the pond near the castle,
there is a brick mill with electromotion from 1914. It was
built in place of an older wooden water mill that was mentioned
in source materials in 1703. For ten generations the
Pawlik family has been engaged in flour – milling. The mill
still works and special demonstrations that involve setting
the wheel in motion with the use of pond water are organised
for tourists.
The ruins of the castle are tidied up, a walk around
the building possible. Visit the mill by prior arrangement
with the owner Franciszek Pawlik, tel. +48 32
