sources were made accessible and others already known were used <strong>in</strong> new ways,<br />

such as historical forms of settlement, place-names, archaeological f<strong>in</strong>ds . Extensive<br />

excavations led to a new <strong>und</strong>erstand<strong>in</strong>g of the Slavonic culture <strong>in</strong> the area<br />

between Elbe-Saale and Oder . Especially, some important Slavonic »burghs«<br />

were discovered <strong>in</strong>to which later German towns <strong>und</strong>oubtedly have entered (Alt-<br />

Lubeck, Berl<strong>in</strong>-Spandau, Brandenburg) . Studies tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account the forms of<br />

settlement, the place-names and archaeological f<strong>in</strong>ds along with the written sources<br />

have proved that the physical and quantitative proportions of the Slavonic<br />

and German agrarian populations were show<strong>in</strong>g extreme differences with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle areas of the region of the medieval German Colonization of the East . Thus<br />

the conditions of the <strong>in</strong>tegration of the Slavonic <strong>in</strong>to the German peasantry varied<br />

to a great extent from one region to another .<br />

Excavations carried out <strong>in</strong> villages which came <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the time of<br />

the German Colonization of the East resulted <strong>in</strong> additional knowledge <strong>in</strong> this<br />

sphere . Studies <strong>in</strong> historical geography have shown that at least <strong>in</strong> parts of the<br />

Germania Slavica the Slavonic peasant population has been liv<strong>in</strong>g as tenants<br />
