such as historical forms of settlement, place-names, archaeological finds . Extensive
excavations led to a new understanding of the Slavonic culture in the area
between Elbe-Saale and Oder . Especially, some important Slavonic »burghs«
were discovered into which later German towns undoubtedly have entered (Alt-
Lubeck, Berlin-Spandau, Brandenburg) . Studies taking into account the forms of
settlement, the place-names and archaeological finds along with the written sources
have proved that the physical and quantitative proportions of the Slavonic
and German agrarian populations were showing extreme differences within the
single areas of the region of the medieval German Colonization of the East . Thus
the conditions of the integration of the Slavonic into the German peasantry varied
to a great extent from one region to another .
Excavations carried out in villages which came into being during the time of
the German Colonization of the East resulted in additional knowledge in this
sphere . Studies in historical geography have shown that at least in parts of the
Germania Slavica the Slavonic peasant population has been living as tenants
