Are school uniforms a good or a bad thing?

uniforms in English stateschools
4. Sek. Gontenschwil: Our project in English lessons
was to explore school uniforms in England.
Here is what we have found out. As a student at a
normal school you usually have to wear the following:
a dark coloured blazer, a white shirt, a tie in the
school or house colours, a belt, black or grey trousers
or, girls only, a skirt in the same colours and
black shoes.
Appearance
• The blazer must be worn every day.
• Shirts must be tucked in to the trousers.
• Socks have to be a plain dark colour.
• Skirts have to be knee length.
Hair style
• Extreme or distractive haircuts are not allowed.
• Extremely coloured hair is not allowed.
Jewellery
• Piercings aren’t allowed. They must be removed;
covering with a plaster isn’t acceptable.
• One discreet bracelet may be worn.
• One discreet necklace may be worn under the
polo shirt.
• One small ring may be worn.
• No hoops are allowed, for health and safety

How and when to wear a School Uniform
Almost every job now these days requires you to
wear a uniform. Jobs like; banker, policeman, waiter,
cleaner, ambulance driver etc. require uniforms.
Uniforms can be used to see where a person works.
For instance the military, when you see someone in
a military uniform, you know that he is here to do
some serious business.
Winter and summer uniform
There are different uniforms for summer and winter,
because they are either too cold or too hot for uniforms,
you can’t just take your shirt off if it’s too hot.
Either the student council or the Head of the school
will decide when winter uniforms are allowed to be
worn, and summer respectively.
Equipment
Students have to come to school properly equipped.
All the proper books must be present, plus their own
writing material.
Physical Education
Students must wear the proper uniform for P.E.
(Physical Education). They must also bring the appropriate
sports shoes, which don’t leave black
marks on the P.E. hall floor.

What speaks for school
uniforms in Swiss schools?
In our English lessons we talked about school uniforms.
We watched a video and we were talking
about the good and the bad things of school uniforms.
We are in favour of school uniforms and now
we going to tell you why…
School uniforms are a good thing because you don’t
have to think about what you are going to wear,
every morning. Furthermore you don’t have to worry
about being laughed of, because everybody looks
the same. That means there is no peer-pressure or
competition. For the parents it’s also easy because
they don’t have to buy expensive clothes for their
children. A school uniform creates a sense of belonging
to a school community. As said in the introduction
we think the school uniforms are a good idea
because it’s easy and cheap. In England school
uniforms have a long tradition. Some of us would
like to introduce school uniforms in Switzerland; we
think this would be a very good idea. Oliver, Joelle,

Self -expression:
We don’t like uniforms because you can’t have your
personality fashion style. All the pupils wear the
same clothes, shoes and have to have a similar
hairstyle. We like to have our personal style to show
who we are.
Bullying:
Everyone knows where you’re going to school.
So.me schools have a good reputation but some
haven’t and sometimes pupils who attend those
schools are getting teased or even bullied.
It’s like a prison:
In a prison, all of the bad people wear uniforms. All
have to wear the same outfit, for example, all orange
or black and white, to make them appear all the same.
Comfort
We don’t think they are really comfortable or healthy.
The uniforms are usually made of cheap synthetic
material, which make you sweat easily. When
you have to studying all the day and it’s better to
wear comfortable and healthy clothes.
Hygiene
Many families haven’t got enough money to buy
more than one uniform per child. That means the
child has to wear the same uniform for a whole
week, without washing. By the end of the week, the
clothes begin to smell.

A book review; Skeleton
Key by Anthony Horowitz
After Alex returned from a hard mission at Point
Blanc Academy, all he really wishes for is to have
a family.
The main character: The good guy
Alex is a fourteen year old boy, but there is something
special about him. When he was young, his
mother died in a car crash and his father was killed
while on a mission. Since he lost his parents he
was raised by his uncle Ian Raider. Because of his
parents and uncles connections Alex was selected
be a spy for the MI6 (secret service of Great Britain).
He had to complete a though training and
when it was completed his whole life changed for
ever. He didn’t go to school very often; he didn’t
have a lot of friends he could trust and of course
he was always on spy missions.
The other main character: The bad guy
He is an ex-general from the Russian army. He has
lost his son during the cold war. His evil plan is to
rewrite Russian history, by letting off about 3’000
kg of nuclear bombs in Murmansk, an important
harbour of the Russia Navy. The idea was that the
toxic clouds would wipe out most of northern and
central Europe, including England. Sarov captures
Alex to make him his son, because Sarov believes
Alex has many similarities with his dead son. This
puts Alex in a very strange situation.
The plot
At first, Alex’s mission in this book was only on a
Search& Destroy mission to the island of Cayo Esqueleto
(Skeleton Key) with the two CIA agents. When the
agents got killed by a trap, Alex was captured and
locked up in up in a castle on the island. He was held
prisoner. Alex had no contact to the outer world. He
tried to escape a few times but always failed. On a
flight to Murmansk, Alex managed to alarm the MI6
in London. In Murmansk the 3’000 kg of nuclear
bombs were held in decommissioned submarines in
the old navy base. Sarov eventually arms the bomb.
Can Alex save the world once more?
My opinion
I read this book because I was interested in it and
because the first book I’ve read by Anthony Horowitz
called «Stormbreaker» was so good. I think this book
is very catchy and full of action. The book is also very
funny and sad at the same time, but all in all I loved
the book. I would recommend this book to anyone
who is interested in reading an English book.
