The triumphant novelty of last year’s Castle Festival will be
continued! This year we again will complete our festival in
the Town Hall with the screening of a grand silent film and
live accompaniment by our Philharmonic Orchestra. Following
Fritz Lang’s „Metropolis”, our principal conductor Cornelius
Meister will perform the music of cinematic history’s
most famous comedian: Charlie Chaplin, who composed the
music to accompany many of his films himself.
„The picture I want to be remembered by”, Chaplin said about
„The Gold Rush”. And he should be right! The famous dance
with bread rolls and the consumption of an old shoe has firmly
secured a place in cinema history for ever.
Loaded both with energy and emotion, it is Chaplin’s music
that makes this film an exclusive masterpiece.
The story is about the renowned tramp treasure-hunting and
following the lure of gold to Alaska alongside many others. Yet
his quest is not as easy as he may have thought: A snowstorm
forces him to shelter in the hut of notorious Big Jim, whose coldbloodedness
and hunger make life hard for him and his comrades.
Thus the dream of gold seems ever so distant …

fortgesetzt! Auch in diesem Jahr beenden wir unser Festival
mit einem großen Stummfilm und der Live-Musik vom Philharmonischen
Orchester in der Stadthalle. Nach Fritz Langs
Metropolis dirigiert unser Generalmusikdirektor Cornelius
Meister die Musik eines der bekanntesten Komikers der Filmgeschichte:
Charlie Chaplin schrieb die Musik für zahlreiche
seiner Filme selbst.
„Mit diesem Film möchte ich in Erinnerung bleiben“, sagte er
über Goldrausch, was ihm zweifelsohne gelang. Der „Brötchentanz“
und der Verzehr eines alten Schuhs gingen als einzigartige
Slapstick-Nummer in die Filmgeschichte ein.
Energiegeladen und mit großem Gefühl macht Chaplins
Musik den Film zu einem Meisterwerk.
