Nach einem Studium der Elektrotechnik und Mathematik an der TU
Braunschweig und Universität Bremen (Diplom in Mathematik) von 1969
bis 1976 spezialisierte er sich im Rahmen einer Postgraduierten Tätigkeit
am Institut für Statistik der Universität von Edinburgh. 1977-1980
arbeitete er dann als Biometriker an der Abteilung für Biometrie der
Schering AG, Berlin. 1980-1981 unterrichtete er Mathematik und Physik
an Gymnasien in Berlin und in Bremen. 1982-1987 war er Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für
Mathematik (Statistik) der Universität Bremen.
1987 wechselte Prof. Antes an das Institut für Med. Biometrie und Med. Informatik des Universitätsklinikum
Freiburg als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter. 1992-94 baute er eine Einheit für Biometrie an der
Abteilung Klinische Pharmakologie der Klinik für Tumorbiologie in Freiburg auf. Seit 1997 ist er Direktor
des Deutschen Cochrane Zentrums am Institut für Medizinische Biometrie und Medizinische Informatik
in Freiburg. Prof. Antes war und ist in einer Reihe von wissenschaftlichen Organen und Verbänden aktiv.
So war er 1998-2004 Mitglied der Steering-Group der Cochrane Collaboration und 2000–2001 Sprecher
der Cochrane Zentren. Seit 2000 ist er Gründungs- und Vorstandsmitglied des Deutschen Netzwerks
Evidenz-basierte Medizin (DNEbM e.V.). Er arbeitet regelmäßig in Seminaren und Ausbildungsgängen
für Wissenschaftsjournalisten (Bertelsmann Stiftung, Universität Dortmund, Henri-Nannen-Schule)
mit und ist seit 2002 Mitglied der erweiterten Leitlinienkommission der AWMF. Seit 2003 besetzt er die
Position des Chair der International Advisory Group of Current Controlled Trials, London. 2005-2007 war
er Sprecher der Initiativgruppe für Aufbau eines nationalen Registers für klinische Studien. Seit 2005
ist Prof. Antes Mitglied des Scientific Advisory Boards der International Clinical Trial Registry Platform
(ICTRP) der WHO. Von 2007-2010 war er auch Mitglied der Ständigen Impfkommission (STIKO) beim
Robert-Koch-Institut. Im September 2007 wurde ihm die Funktion des Projektkoordinators des Deutschen
Registers Klinischer Studien (BMBF) übertragen und im Oktober 2008 führte er das Cochrane Colloquium
in Freiburg durch. 2012 wurde Prof. Antes eine Honorarprofessur der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg
verliehen und August 2012 wurde er auch als Mitglied des ECPM Advisory Boards berufen (European Center
of Pharmaceutical Medicine, Universität Basel).
After studying electrical engineering and mathematics at the TU Braunschweig and the University of
Bremen (degree in Mathematics) from 1969 until 1976, he specialized in the context of a post-graduate
position at the Institute of Statistics of the University of Edinburgh. 1977-1980 he worked as biometrician
at the Department of Biometry of Schering AG, Berlin. 1980-1981 he taught mathematics and physics
at secondary schools in Berlin and Bremen. From 1982 until 1987 he worked as a research fellow at the
Institute of Mathematics (Statistics), University of Bremen.
In 1987 Prof. Antes moved to the Institute of Medical Biometry and Medical Computer Science of the
University of Freiburg as a research assistant. 1992-1994 he built a Unit of Biometrics within the
Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Tumor Biology Center in Freiburg. Since 1997, he has been
Director of the German Cochrane Centre at the Institute of Medical Biometry and Medical computer science
in Freiburg. Prof. Antes was and is active in a number of academic institutions and associations.
He was a member of the Steering Group of the Cochrane Collaboration 1998-2004 and 2000-2001
spokesman of the Cochrane centers. Since 2000 he has been a founding and board member of the German
Network for Evidence-Based Medicine (DNEbM eV). He regularly works with in seminars and training
courses for science journalists (Bertelsmann Foundation, University of Dortmund, Henri Nannen School)
and since 2002, he has been a member of the Extended Commission of the AWMF Guidelines. Since 2003,
he has occupied the position of Chair of the International Advisory Group of Current Controlled Trials,
London. 2005-2007 he was Chairman of the Initiative Group for Development of a National Registry
for Clinical Trials. Since 2005, Prof. Antes has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the
International Clinical Trial Registry Platform (ICTRP) of the WHO. From 2007-2010, he was a member of the
Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) at the Robert Koch Institute. In September 2007, he accepted
the function of the Project Coordinator of the German Clinical Trials Register (BMBF) and in October 2008,
he led the Cochrane Colloquium at Freiburg. Prof. Antes was awarded an honorary professorship at the
Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg in 2012 and he was also appointed a member of the Advisory Board
ECPM in August 2012 (European Center of Pharmaceutical Medicine, University of Basel).
