Is it more exciting to acquire a work by a highly
established artist or to discover a young one?
At some point I was faced with the question whether
to buy ten pictures for two thousand euros or one for
twenty thousand. I opted for the latter. You actually
want to see the artist become more famous and to
watch the value and the demand for his works rise. In
many cases I was unfortunately born too late for that.
Backstage Riders
You’ve always bought something at the art forum to
help support it.
I was pleased that there was such an art fair in Berlin.
Why should we have to go to Cologne or Basel to buy
art? I regret the loss. I think that the fair agencies are
really more concerned with managing themselves and
they are thus getting more and more expensive.
But that will surely be compensated for in the near
future. Berlin has so much drive, as far as art is
concerned. The gallerists are always complaining that
there aren’t any buyers in Berlin. But if we have an art
fair here, the buyers come from all sorts of other places
to do their buying in Berlin.

Eine Arbeit aus der Serie „Steel life“, ein Quadrat in
Weiß mit einem Metallrahmen. Ich war in Würzburg,
als Morellet den Ruppert-Preis bekam. Sein Sohn
sagte mir, dass sein Vater auch noch das Negativ
machen wolle. Daraufhin kam ich mit Morellet ins
Gespräch. 85 ist er jetzt und unheimlich humorvoll.
Ich erwähnte, dass ich sehr gerne das Pendant hätte,
und da antwortete er: „Machen sie`s doch selber!“ Das
ist mir noch nicht passiert, dass ein Künstler einem
Sammler empfiehlt, ihn nachzuahmen.
Eine andere Anekdote gibt es mit Gerhard Richter.
Er hatte im Guggenheim die Ausstellung „Acht Grau“.
Riesengroße Scheiben, die grau getönt waren. Es gab
eine Preview, bei der er die Kataloge signierte. Ich gab
ihm meine Visitenkarte und wollte wissen, was ihm
denn zu meinem Namen einfallen würde. Richter
nahm einen Bleistift und zeichnete einen Winkel, das
hat er dann signiert. Jetzt habe ich eine Zeichnung von
Gerhard Richter – einen grauen Winkel!
Das Sammlergespräch fand am 5.8. 2011 in der Bar Tausend
statt. Unser Moderator, der Soziologe Jan Kage alias Yaneq,
spricht jeden Donnerstag um 19 Uhr in seiner Sendung
„Radio Arty“ mit Künstlern und Kuratoren auf 100,6 Motor
FM.
Do you have a favourite work, or does that change?
Of course there are some works I’m especially fond
of. They are typically blue and very aesthetically
appealing. I’ve recently hung up a work by François
Morellet in my living room: a work from the series
“Steel Life” showing a rectangle in white in a metal
frame. I was in Würzburg when Morellet received the
Ruppert Prize. His son told me that his father wanted
to make a negative image of it. Soon thereafter I struck
up a conversation with Morellet. He’s 85 years old
now and he’s got a great sense of humour. I mentioned
to him that I would love to have the complementary
work matching the one I have, and he said to me:
“Make it yourself!” That’s never happened to me
before: an artist recommending to a collector that he
imitate him!
There’s another story about Gerhard Richter.
He was at his exhibition “Eight Grey” at the
Guggenheim: huge surfaces that were coloured grey.
There was a preview where he was signing catalogues.
I gave him my card and asked him what my name
made him think of. Richter took out a pencil and drew
an angle and then signed it. Now I have a drawing by
Gerhard Richter! A grey angle! 1

A ‘Backstage rider’ or a ‘hospitality rider’ is a
list of requests artists and performers make as a
condition prior to their performance at a certain
venue. Whereas a ‘technical rider’ lists technical
equipment, backstage riders generally contain
specific requests regarding food and beverages,
as well as anything from soap preferences to the
need for an available private gym. The backstage
rider may display modesty (‘We have tried to be
financially responsible in making this rider’ – Lou
Reed) or a sheer lack of it (57 demands, including
four golf cars – Jay Z), an expression of power (‘All
televisions need to be preset to Fox News Channel’
– Dick Cheney) or a sense of humour (‘A Bob Hope
impersonator and a copy of USA Today that’s got a
story about morbidly obese people in it’ – Iggy Pop),
or simply display a certain performance anxiety and
need for control.
Taking its point of departure from such lists
of demands and requirements, the exhibition
‘Backstage Riders’ seeks to explore a wide range of
aspects belonging to the world of entertainment,
performance, rituals and scores. The excessive
backstage riders of stars and their ‘unreasonable
requests’ is a popular tabloid subject. But treated as
a socio-economic format, the list of demands offers
a complex exhibition concept that goes well beyond
the sole relationship between art and music.
Als „Backstage Rider“ oder „Hospitality Rider“ werden
jene Listen von Wünschen bezeichnet, die Musiker
oder Künstler als Bedingung an ihre Auftritte knüpfen
und im Vorfeld den Veranstaltern zukommen lassen.
Während ein „Technical Rider“ das technische
Equipment umfasst, werden in einem „Backstage
Rider“ neben bestimmten Vorlieben hinsichtlich der
Verpflegung noch ganz andere Dinge aufgelistet – das
kann von der Art der Seife bis hin zu einem privaten
Fitnessstudio reichen. Manche Backstage Rider zeugen
von beeindruckender Bescheidenheit („Wir haben uns
bei der Erstellung dieser Liste bemüht, im finanziellen
Rahmen zu bleiben“, Lou Reed) oder deren Gegenteil
(57 Forderungen, darunter vier Golfcars, Jay Z);
andere drücken Macht aus („Alle Fernseher müssen
auf den Sender Fox News Channel eingestellt sein“,
Dick Cheney), beweisen Sinn für Humor („Bitte
auch einen Bob-Hope-Imitator und eine Ausgabe von
USA Today mit einer Geschichte von pathologisch
korpulenten Menschen drin“, Iggy Pop) oder verraten
schlicht Lampenfieber.
Ausgehend von solchen Listen untersucht die
Ausstellung „Backstage Riders“ eine Reihe an
Phänomenen aus der Welt der Unterhaltungsindustrie
und setzt sich mit Performances, Ritualen und
Workflow-Skripts auseinander. Übertriebene Backstage
Rider von Stars mit maßlosen Anforderungen sind
längst beliebtes Thema der Boulevardpresse. Aus
sozioökonomischer Sicht bieten die Listen Potenzial
für ein vielschichtiges Ausstellungskonzept, das über
