Anja Saran
A young woman is sitting at a brown wooden table in the kitchen with her
back to the observer. A white box that cannot be identified is standing on the
table. She seems to be waiting for something. Absolute darkness finds its way
through the window and contrasts the dazzling light in the kitchen. It is close to
midnight. Only the ticking of the kitchen clock is audible. In this first scene the
excitement and expectations of the young woman who is impersonated by the
artist will also be felt by the viewer.
Only with the delayed fade-in of the right projection the situation can be clarified:
We see the young woman from the scene before marking quail eggs with a
pencil and placing them in a white box, a special breeder. With the hatching of
the quail chicks, Anja Saran begins a pseudo-scientific experiment that focuses
on the relationship between man and nature. The artist’s apartment serves as
the tangible scene for the rearing of quails. The experiment is complemented
with performative elements. The artist herself is seen in three different roles: as
the young woman, the caring farmer and the courageous hunter.
In the living room the artist installed an artificial idyll for the quail chicks in full
surrogate: a green carpet serves as lawn substitute, a little wooden house with
straw offers the warmth of a nest, a low hanging heat lamp functions as a sun
alternative, a photo tapestry with clouds completes the farm scenery. Now the
character of the caring farmer enters for the first time. She is wearing a long,
dark skirt, a white blouse and her overlong loose hair falls very naturally. Scenes
of excessive affection between the quail mother and her pupils are revealed to
the viewer. Unlike the voice-over explaining scientific background information
we know from documentaries about animals, the growing up of the quails is
shown situationally. The quails are fledged now, inhabit the whole apartment
of the artist and take it as their natural habitat. Every day scenes of the uncontrollable
quail household with lots of dirt, chaos and labor are shown. The
camera shows the interior as a sculptural landscape and result of a collective
performance of man and animal.
Thereafter, the next character appears: the armed hunter. Again and again she
sneaks through the rooms in the search of trails of the quails. She raises the
gun to the shoulder and shoots. With the fade-in to the kitchen the hunt ends
abruptly. There, the hunter prepares the quails as a culinary dish. The experiment
ends with the clearance of all traces and the return to normality. What
remains is the unfulfilled longing for a life with and within nature and the possible
inspiration for an own quail breeding – only a mouse click away.
