facilitating variability in the aircraft`s static margin. The final
degree of freedom involves variation in the gap represented by
the height of the top wing relative to the main wing. The option
to vary gap and stagger is envisaged to improve handling qualities
particularly during low-speed operations and where cross-wind
conditions become unfavourable.
The top wing`s lifting surface design is a variable stiffness,
compliant structural system comprising embedded and specially
designed two-way electro-strictive actuators within a truss arrangement
employing a combination of flexural and articulated
joints. The discrete trailing edge surface of the top wing is actuated
with two electro-mechanical actuators installed on each lifting
surface to augment control and ensure system redundancy.
Researchers at Bauhaus Luftfahrt postulate that the usage of such
advanced materials, unconventional structural morphologies and
novel actuator technologies complements future aspirations of delivering
electro-mobility solutions. Electrical power being the only
source of force transmission could possibly maximise the available
net volume for electro-mechanical actuators on board, as aircraft
would no longer require integral fuel tanks.
