Insults
A very aggressive form of remark is an
insult – a remark which questions your
credibility in front of others. Consider
this:
Scenario 1: You are in a meeting. A colleague,
John, who is on the same level of
seniority as you turns around and says,
‘Quite frankly, I don’t think the way you
handled the situation was very professional.’
Th e room goes quiet and all eyes
are on you.
Answer 1: In fact, your colleague is hoping
to be talent-spotted by the managers
in the room. You are simply being
used as a stepping stone. You could try
saying ‘Could we get some other opinions
on this? Th ose who agree with
John, please raise your hand’. By doing
this, you enlist the help of others. John’s
tactics are exposed and you have not
crossed a line into rudeness.
Intrusions
Other remarks simply go too far. Although
your fi rst instinct is probably to
fi ght back, it can be more eff ective to
remain cool. Th is is especially tricky in
formal situations like job interviews or
when other people are present. Here are
some ways to deal with cheeky remarks:
Scenario 2: You are in a job interview.
Everything is going well until the interviewer
catches you unawares by asking

‘So, let’s talk about your future plans –
are you planning on having children?’
An awkward silence opens up and your
mind starts racing for something to say.
Answer 2: Clearly, it is none of the
interviewer’s business. However, saying
so in an interview is not going to win
you any points. You could say ‘Can you
plan children? I don’t have an entry in
my diary’, showing that you are not going
to be drawn into a discussion.
