Division MAQ
Metrology, Automation and Quality
Science are elementary for production
processes. In spite of focusing on this
area, the division MAQ considers the products,
the companies and the processes
as holonic units. This results in a wide field
of business activities with the thematic priorities
being geared to the requirements
of a sustainable production.
Geometric Metrology: The measurement
of geometric features is the center
competence of the division MAQ. This
area comprises of tactile and non-contact
(including optical) measurement
procedures. The spectrum covers the
inspection of gear wheels as well as the
laser measurement of surfaces and layer
thicknesses in the micrometer range. The
tasks vary from fundamental developments
of new measurement procedures
and sensors to the applied optimization
of accuracy and measuring speed.
Signal and Image Processing: This
department deals with micro- and
nano-measurement projects, such as the
simulation and processing of scattered
light images. The manufacturers of optics
apply this kind of metrology for characterizing
surfaces and for measuring
roughness. Furthermore, the department
is involved in the field of medical-technical
research with projects like diagnosing
Glaucoma by computer aided analysis
and testing the intra-ocular pressure with
an innovative measuring principle.
Quality Management and In-Process
Metrology: Quality management is
essential within modern production. However,
automotive engineering or micro
production processes are often limited by
the boundaries of possibility. Thus, mass
production with a high process capability
can only be achieved by an in-process
metrology. Then, the process in action is
controlled based on the measured data.
For a process spanning quality management
it is not sufficient to consider
separate processing steps. Instead, the
holonic process chain has to be analysed
and modeled.
Energy Systems: From more rational
methods of using energy to innovative
concepts for the augmented application
of regenerative energy: The engagement
in this department covers research in
both new storage technologies as well as
energy management of hybrid vehicles
and power supply networks. This also
includes monitoring, post mortem analysing
and estimating life-times of wind
generators and their gear boxes.
Automation- and Information-Systems:
This research area covers conventional
technologies like CNC and PLC controlled
robots and machine tools. Modern
wireless systems based on BlueTooth
and UMTS as well as RFID applications
within logistics open up new production
possibilities.
Technical Service Center: The Center
consists of a machine hall and laboratories.
Numerous tasks related to research
contracts or project co-operations are
processed: From circuit design of prototypic
devices to implementing complex
equipment for automation purposes.
Concerning education, the Center allows
practical training and offers small and
medium sized companies the possibility
to read up on new technologies and to
take qualified advice.
