UP-Prosa<br />
Problem: In the field of geometry and<br />
dimensional metrology the inspection<br />
characteristics of workpieces are verified.<br />
These characteristics have specific values<br />
and tolerances which are defined by<br />
construction drawings. An example for<br />
such a quality inspection is the test of<br />
diameter and roundness of an engine<br />
block’s cylinder bore.<br />
Nowadays, various measuring devices<br />
from different manufacturers exist. They<br />
have different designs and measuring<br />
technologies and therefore, almost<br />
every manufacturer uses its own software<br />
to control the hardware, evaluate the<br />
measured data, as well as to record the<br />
results.<br />
Solution: At this point of development,<br />
the research project UP-Prosa started,<br />
aiming at the standardization of specific<br />
parts of the whole intended production<br />
process. It started with the design and the<br />
definition of quality criteria and continued<br />
with real measuring processes of individual<br />
quality features of the workpiece being<br />
manufactured. For this, the process of<br />
generating the quality control plan as well<br />
as the coding of measuring programs<br />
was simplified. Concerning the programming<br />
of geometric measuring devices,<br />
a complex platform was planned and<br />
almost completely realized that allows<br />
controlling different geometric measuring<br />
devices with one uniform user interface.<br />
To control the measuring device via<br />
the user interface a communication<br />
protocol was designed. This protocol<br />
transmits general information and includes<br />
universal commands for moves and<br />
measurements to be used with different<br />
geometric measuring devices.<br />
At the level of geometric measuring<br />
devices a universal controlling software<br />
named Prosa InterCommunicator<br />
(Prosa-ICom) was designed. Prosa-ICom<br />
communicates via network with the user<br />
interface and translates the defined<br />
protocol into a measuring device specific<br />
form. The internal structure is extendable.<br />
Thus it is prepared for both new developments<br />
and upgrades (retrofit) of all kinds<br />
of geometric measuring devices.<br />
Product: To spread the results of the<br />
project a unit-type “UP-Prosa-Retrofit<br />
Package” was composed. It is intended<br />
to be used with new and old devices and<br />
combined sensor systems. The package<br />
contains user guides and source codes<br />
to extend the graphical user interface<br />
and to connect ”Prosa-ICom” to your own<br />
device. The package is available at a<br />
service charge via the international business<br />
platform EVIGeM (www.evigem.org).<br />
The UP-Prosa platform merges the<br />
whole geometry and dimensional<br />
metrology and simplifies the handling of<br />
inspection processes. This aggregation<br />
leads to unified interfaces of different<br />
measuring devices with their specialized<br />
sensors.<br />
Project: The Innonet-Project UP-Prosa<br />
was funded by the German Ministry<br />
for Economy and Labour (BMWA) and<br />
coordinated by BIBA at the University of<br />
<strong>Bremen</strong>/Germany.<br />
