Das Projekt Horizon Field von Antony Gormley ist für
2010 in Planung
Weltweit hat Antony Gormley spektakuläre Projekte in archetypischen
Naturlandschaften inszeniert. Horizon Field, seine für das
österreichische Bundesland Vorarlberg entwickelte Arbeit, besteht
aus einhundert lebensgroßen Körperformen aus massivem Gusseisen,
die so über ein Gebiet von 150 Quadratkilometern verteilt werden,
dass sie eine durchgängige horizontale Ebene in einer Höhe
von 2039 Metern Seehöhe bilden. Von jedem Punkt des Gebiets
aus sollte man als Besucher zumindest eine Körperform sehen,
beim Aufstieg auf diese Höhe weitere in den Blick bekommen und
noch einmal weitere als Anordnung ausnehmen, wenn man die
Höhe der Arbeit erreicht hat. Die einzelnen Teile schauen in alle
Richtungen, sind aber einander niemals zugewandt. Der Abstand,
in dem sie aufgestellt werden, variiert je nach Topografie zwischen
einigen hundert Metern und mehreren Kilometern. Die Funktionalität
des Feldes verbindet Sehen und Gesehenwerden mit Relativität
des Raums, Greifbarkeit und Wahrnehmungsfeld. Horizon Field
feiert die seit Langem bestehende Beziehung zwischen Mensch
und alpiner Landschaft. Der Künstler betont, dass seine Arbeiten
einen menschlichen Raum im Raum überhaupt bezeichnen: Sie
sind weder Darstellungen (Statuen) noch Symbole, sondern markieren,
wo Menschen einst waren oder sein konnten.

Antony Gormley has staged spectacular projects in archetypal
natural landscapes all over the world. Horizon Field, the work he
has conceived for the Austrian Vorarlberg, consists of one hundred
life-size solid cast iron bodyforms installed in a dispersed field of
150 square kilometers creating a consistent horizontal plane at
2,039 meters above sea level. From any point within the area the
visitor should be able to see at least one bodyform and, should the
spectator climb to the level of the work, would see more on the
skyline while approaching, and several more as a constellation at
the height of the work. The individual pieces face in all directions
but never towards each other. They will be separated at intervals
of a few hundred meters to several kilometers depending on the
topography. The field functionality combines seeing and being seen
with the relativity of space, palpability and the perceptual field.
Horizon Field celebrates the long relationship between the human
animal and this alpine landscape. The artist has made clear that
these works indicate a human space in space at large – they are
neither representations (statues) nor symbols, but the register of
where a man once was or could be.
