Willkommen in der Steigenberger world.
*A clear conscience alone does not guarantee a good night’s sleep. The
quality of your mattress and pillow is just as important. That’s why the
‘Steigenberger Grandhotel in Heringsdorf’ has created the inviting ‘pillow
from super soft to firm and healthy. Welcome to ‘Steigenberger world’.
texte: MARein BUDineR
*Steigenberger people
Hospitality, luxury and culinary delights –
meet some of the skilled professionals, who make up the Steigenberger group
claudia Wichert
Wenn claudia Wichert über Weine
spricht, klingt es fast, als erzählte
sie von guten alten Bekannten. „ich
kenne die eigenschaften ihrer Rebsorten,
ihre heimat und ihr Parfüm“,
sagt sie, „meine Welt ist die
der edlen tropfen.“ Die 29-jährige
Weinberaterin des Gourmet-Restaurants
calla im Steigenberger
hotel hamburg erläutert: „Für den
Geschmack und die Reife eines
Weines sind sein herkunftsland,
die Lage des Anbaugebiets und die
Beschaffenheit des Bodens nur ein
Aspekt, genauso wichtig ist das
Spiel von Sonne, Regen und Wind.“
in der Weinberatung „muss man
Geschmackserlebnisse ‚übersetzen‘,
eine gemeinsame Sprache mit
dem Gast finden“, definiert sie ihre
Aufgabe, „meine Weine muss ich
hierfür sehr gut kennen – nur so
kann ich die Wünsche des Gastes
und die Aromen des Menüs in einklang
bringen.“
*When claudia Wichert talks about
different types of wine, it’s almost
like she’s talking about old friends.
“i know all about their regions of
origin, the characteristics of the
grapes and their aromas,” she says.
“Fine wines are my world.” the
29-year-old Wine consultant at the
gourmet restaurant ‘calla’, at the
Steigenberger hotel hamburg, continues:
“the country of origin, the
location of the vineyard, and the
soil conditions are just some of the
aspects which determine the flavour
and maturity of a wine. the interplay
of sun, rain and wind is
equally important.” A wine consultant
has to be able to “impart taste
experiences to the guests and find
a common language,” she explains.
“i have to be extremely knowledgeable
about my wines so i can match
up the flavours on the menu with
the wishes of my guests.”
Nico Burkhardt
nach den Sternen hat nico Burkhardt
gegriffen. Für einen Koch ist
das keine Seltenheit, in dem Alter
aber schon: Seit 2011 ist der heute
27-Jährige ein Sternekoch, einer
der jüngsten in Deutschland. „ich
hatte nur wenig Zeit, den testern
des Guide Michelin zu zeigen, dass
unsere mutigen und filigranen Speisen
im Restaurant olivo auf
höchstem niveau zubereitet werden“,
erzählt Burkhardt, seit Juni
2011 als Küchenchef im Steigenberger
Graf Zeppelin in Stuttgart tätig.
nach Stationen in Österreich, den
USA, in heinz Winklers Sterneküche
und als Stellvertreter des
Gourmetkochs Karlheinz hauser
fühlte sich der zielstrebige Berliner
bestätigt: er wollte ein Meister seines
Fachs werden. es ist ihm früh
schon geglückt. Gibt es schon ein
nächstes Ziel? „Aber sicher“, sagt
nico Burkhardt, „ein zweiter Stern
soll es schon sein – ich will mich
nicht auf Lorbeeren ausruhen.“
*nico Burkhardt reached for the
stars. in his profession as a chef,
many do – but his success is rare,
given his age. now 27, he became
one of Germany’s youngest starrated
chef in 2011. “i only had a few
months to show the Gault Millau
reviewers that the bold, but delicate
dishes we serve at the restaurant
‘olivio’ are prepared to the
highest standards,” says Burkhardt,
chef de cuisine at the Steigenberger
Graf Zeppelin in Stuttgart
since last June. the determined
young Berliner has also worked in
Austria, in the USA, in heinz Winkler’s
star-rated kitchen, and as the
second in command for gourmet
chef Karlheinz hauser – ringing endorsements
indeed. Burkhardt
wanted to become a master in his
field, and he has succeeded. Does
he have any goals left? “of course,”
he says. “i would like a second star.
i don’t want to rest on my laurels.”
ulrike GoldFriedrich
Goldfriedrich in ihrem element.
*When things in the lobby get really busy, Ulrike Goldfriedrich
is in her element. As the Senior Receptionist at the
Steigenberger Grandhotel handelshof in the heart of
Leipzig’s city centre, her two top priorities are: “Keeping
track of everything, and paying close attention to detail.”
Since the hotel opened its doors in April last year, the
29-year-old has been taking care of the needs of her
guests with thoughtfulness, empathy and passion – from
the moment they check in. “the most important aspects
of my job are being a good listener, and developing a feel
for people’s different needs, even at times when speed is
of the essence,” she says. Ulrike Goldfriedrich never
stands still. every day brings with it new challenges.
Fehmi aBaziBra-merteN
bereits.
Hartung
*A real team player – that’s how Fehmi Abazibra-Merten,
41, describes himself. “i feel great when i’m around my
bernd
colleagues, and i think my guests notice this as well,” says
the Junior Waiter, who has been serving guests in the restaurant
at the Steigenberger Parkhotel Düsseldorf since
gläScHer;
the year 2000. “For me, team work is all about respect,
reliability and understanding. naturally, these are also the
Jörg
qualities required for looking after my guests,” explains
the native croat. “to be a good host, you have to meet
the needs and expectations of your guests, and be open
FecHner;
and welcoming.” he also believes that it’s important to be
familiar with the languages of his international guests. “i
andreaS
speak some turkish, a bit of Farsi and knows some polite
phrases in Arabic and Russian,” Abazibra-Merten says. Foto:
*in just three minutes, he can turn an apple into a swan.
But for a glider cut from a radish, a delicate blossom
made of papaya, or for a ship carved from a cucumber,
even the distinguished fruit and vegetable carver
torsten Lewerenz needs a little longer. “My motivation
is the ‘wow factor’. i love surprising people with my creations,”
says the chef de cuisine at the Steigenberger
hotel Frankfurt-Langen. he was trained in this art,
which originated in china, by one of the best in the
trade: two-time world champion xiang Wang. Whether
it’s wedding buffets, vegetable origami or sushi merrygo-rounds
– the unusual craft of the runner-up in the
2005 european championship requires a delicate approach,
an eye for beauty and a steady hand. “the rest
is just practice, practice and more practice,” adds Lewerenz,
who offers classes for guests, who would like to
try their hand at creating a culinary work of art.
Martin Staib ist mit Leib und Seele Junior Sous chef im Steigenberger
hotel Dortmund.
„hotel“. Die damit verbundene Förderung als nachwuchsführungstalent
will sie konsequent nutzen. Dabei setzt sie auf ihre bereits erwiesenen
Stärken: Wacher Geist, Stressresistenz und Geduld.
*Martin Staib puts his heart and soul into his role as Junior Sous chef at the Steigenberger hotel Dortmund. he loves the culinary
artistry, kitchen management and menu design his job entails. “there’s nothing more satisfying than making people happy with good
food,” Staib explains. his passion and skills also convinced the judges of the egon Steigenberger prize. Last year, the 26-year-old
was awarded the prize for young talents in the ‘food & beverage’ category, and will continue to be sponsored by the Steigenberger
group. “it’s great, because it helps me get closer to my dream. i look forward to some training in hotel management and human resources.
After all, i would like to contribute to there being ideal conditions in the hotel and restaurant trade in 20 years’ time.”
Lysann clauss likes to know exactly how things work. “i have always been interested in what goes on behind the scenes in a hotel.”
this is how the 23-year-old Management Assistant at the Steigenberger hotel Berlin explains why she works in a place where others
spend their holidays. Being the hotel manager’s ‘right-hand woman’ is the ideal way of finding the answers to clauss’s queries. “i am
often the one who has to find answers my colleagues‘ questions, too” she explains. “And with every new query, another world opens
up.” her approach seems to work well – so well, that clauss was awarded the egon Steigenberger prize in the ‘hotel’ category in
2011. She is planning to make full use of the sponsorship opportunities which come with the prize. the business administration graduate
is certain she has the keen intellect, the ability to deal with stress and the patience required.
An oliver näve kommt kein Genießer vorbei.
*no gourmet can afford to ignore oliver näve: the Gault Millau gourmet guide praised his
“unusual, alluring desserts” and awarded the 34-year-old head Pastry chef of the restaurant
‘Français’ – at the Steigenberger hotel Frankfurter hof in Frankfurt – the title of Pastry chef of
the Year 2011. näve, who himself prefers savoury dishes, has remained modest: “Well, there
are just not that many good pastry chefs around.” he says he has not really focused on becoming
successful, but has always worked to the highest standard. “i just do what i am good at.
But, of course, i am delighted when my work goes down well with the guests.” And his delicious
works of art certainly do.

will.
Besucher.
All diese
In and around Gstaad, nobody is surprised to see cyclists breathing
easily as they reach the top of a hill, while hikers often arrive with
sweat trickling down their backs. People in Gstaad do not like to wear
themselves out. This explains the popularity of electric bikes, which allow
cyclists to switch on additional, battery-generated propulsion. Also
called ‘Flyer Bikes’, they are a great choice for any cycling enthusiast, who
wants to conquer the inclines with any kind of elegance. Around the
world-famous tourist destination in the Bernese Highlands, there are
nine electric bike routes with a large number of battery exchange stations.
This kind of sporting activity fits in well with the laid-back nature of
the typical visitor to Gstaad. Hardcore cyclists, dogged athletes with
flushed faces, or amateur sportsmen carrying vials of performance enhancing
substances are not the kind of visitors Gstaad wants to attract.
It is too dignified and too gracious for that – and too down to earth.
Those who lump Gstaad together with ritzy holiday resorts like Zermat
or even St Moritz, really do the village a disservice. “Gstaad does not put
on an act. It is unspoilt and exhilarating at the same time,” says Ferdinand
Salverda, General Manager at the Steigenberger Hotel Gstaad. “I’m
really thankful to have the opportunity to work here.” Among those, who
used to unwind here regularly, were film stars like Tony Curtis, Elizabeth
Taylor and Roger Moore, but also the photographer and playboy Gunter
Sachs and conductor Yehudi Menuhin. To this day, director Roman Polanski,
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and designer Valentino own
residences in Gstaad. Pop queen Madonna and actor Sean Connery, too,
recharge their batteries in this mountain idyll, and stroll across the
‘Promenade’ to the dairy. Seeing all these famous faces is as commonplace
in Gstaad, as seeing cattle being driven up the mountain past the
Gucci store.
Everyone here will tell you the following charming story – those who
were born here and cannot tear themselves away; the new arrivals, who
have fallen in love with the mountainous landscape on the border with
the French-speaking parts of Switzerland; and the regular guests who
have been visiting the Saanenland region for decades. It is a myth according
to which God supported himself with one hand on the Bernese
mountains while creating the world. His fingers rested in the five tributary
valleys, which explains the unique beauty of the Saanenmöser-
so gelungen.
alles, was eine veritable Bergregion ausmacht: Seen, Grünflächen, Bäche,
Hobelkäse-Laibe in Richtung Tal geschafft.
valleys. “To me, it is a mystical landscape with many nodes of energy,”
says Salverda. Situated at altitudes of 1,000 to 3,000 metres above sea
level, the local landscape does indeed offer everything that defines a
genuine alpine region. Lakes, green spaces, streams and forests. The
mountains are not angular; the rocks not craggy; and all the mountain
passes are smooth. As new arrivals take the ‘Goldenpass’ panoramic train
from Zweisimmen to Gstaad, they see the peaceful Saanenland region
stretching out below them.
A special local ordinance passed in 1955 by the municipality of
Saanen, of which Gstaad forms part, has proved to be far-sighted. According
to this regulation any new buildings can only be built in the
‘chalet’ style. Gstaad’s charm is in no small measure due to this rule.
Thanks to it, the passion for carpentry has been passed down the generations,
which is why the Ralph Lauren shop and the branch of USB are
also located in chalets. “I appreciate this traditional, rustic, top-quality
woodwork, which gives a special quality not just to Gstaad, but also to
the Steigenberger Hotel.” says Salverda. “I also like that I get to experience
all four seasons up here. Our offers, events and services are directly
dependent on this.” This rustic character is the essence of Gstaad, but
this does not in any way clash with the glamour, which the jet set brings
into town. “On the contrary,” says Martin Bachofner, Gstaad-Saanenland’s
director of tourism, “the great thing about Gstaad is that people
here are completely at ease with these contradictions.” Gstaad is refined,
subtle and tranquil. Visitors benefit from these attributes, especially
when they make full use of the area’s 300 kilometres of hiking trails or
pay a visit to some of the 80 Alpine peaks.
Alpine farmers are happy to answer questions about their daily work.
Up there, at altitudes of 1,400 to 2,000 metres, they do not just milk
goats, sheep and cows, and drive them onto the meadows. They also
engage in traditional cheese making. Even today, up to 80 establishments
in the area make their own cheeses at high altitudes. This imbues the
cheeses with flavours, which are very distinct from those produced in the
valley – due to the different grasses and herbs the animals eat at the
various elevations.
Gstaad is wonderful and peculiar at the same time. Since 1999, the
centre of the village as been pedestrianised, yet it has its own airport. It
hosts internationally renowned top events, such as the Beach Volleyball
Grand Slam, or the men’s tennis tournament. But while bankers in white
gloves work on improving their handicap, wheels of traditional ‘Hobelkäse’
cheese are being transported into the valley. That’s not unusual
– the intrinsic calm of the people of Gstaad is the exciting part.
genau richtig.
vielleicht mal ein Bed and Breakfast.
Was brauchen Sie dafür?
Was noch?
Do you enjoy travelling?
Absolutely! I’m a Gemini and we have a reputation for being curious,
communicative, and for our love of travel. So, we feel at home in a hotel
environment.
Do you remember the very first time you stayed in a hotel?
Oh, let me think. When I was a child, there was not much wiggle room
in the family budget. When I was an adolescent, we sometimes went
camping or stayed in a B&B. I only actually started staying in hotels,
when my job required me to travel.
Did you enjoy that?
Yes, of course. Although, I worked at the theatre back then, so the accommodation
was basic, but not bad.
Did the hotels get better when you started working in film?
Was muss Sie erwarten – Blumen, Obst, Mineralwasser?
the Princess and the Warrior
2000 Donna leon – Venezianische Scharade
There was a time when film producers were still flush with cash, and
could afford to be generous. If the whole crew is housed in a five-star
hotel during a shoot, the underlying mood tends to be positive.
After a long day’s filming, can you actually enjoy the comforts that
are on offer, or do you just collapse into bed with exhaustion?
It is true that you get used to the luxury, even if you do not take full
advantage of it. It is a little bit like flying to New York in first class for
the first time. You spend the first hour just trying to figure out all the
things your seat can do. The most important thing in a top hotel is this:
you know that if there is a problem, all it takes is a quick word with
someone, and they will sort out anything and everything for you. When
When you are shooting a film, you sometimes stay in a hotel for up
to three weeks. Does the hotel become a surrogate home?
Yes, it does. So, it is well worth having the odd argument with the production
company about their choice of accommodation, if you feel it is
unsuitable. In my profession, it is extremely important that you feel comfortable
in your surroundings.
What do you require for that?
It goes beyond the purely practical. At times, my wishes are a little bit out
of the ordinary.
Tell me more…
Sometimes, I get back to the hotel from a shoot on location in the middle
of the night and if it is in winter, I feel frozen stiff. So it’s great if the
hotel staff are happy to fire up the sauna again for me. They get extra
marks for that.
What else?
If I am booked to stay in a hotel room for a longer period of time, I do
not want the staff to restore it to what it looks like in the brochure every
day. I like to make the space my own, and when I get back after a shoot,
I’d like to find it, how I remember it.
Perhaps just a tad cleaner?
Maybe. At any rate, it is awful, if I have asked for this to be done and my
wishes are ignored, even if it is with the best of intentions. It is annoying,
when I cannot find my things, because the room has been tidied. I don’t
like that at all. As an avid football fan, it is also great to be able to watch
Bundesliga games live.
Do you also rearrange the furniture and take pictures off the walls?
I would not rule that out. Even if I stay longer, I don’t necessarily need
four huge armchairs. I don’t get that many visitors. I sometimes just push
them to one side, or have them taken away, so that I can work out a little.
So, there has to be enough space for a yoga mat? ?
Precisely, and I will make the space.
Are you one of those guests who never travels without their own pillow?
Stammgast?
mir mal angucken, was du da ausgesucht hast.
2011 tom Sawyer
No, no, I’m not that particular. Although, I have to admit that there have
been times when I have longed for the pillow I have at home. But in a
good hotel, you can usually ask for, and be given, a softer or firmer one.
What do you expect to find in your room – flowers, fruit or mineral
water?
Those are a nice touch, but essentially, I do not really need that many
frills. A simple, no-nonsense room can be just as inviting to me. I usually
put any lace doilies or tabletop displays in a big drawer early on.
What else sets apart a great hotel from a decent one?
I like breakfast rooms which have corners and recesses, especially when
the room is large. The most important thing is the personal rapport the
staff have with me: that they are empathetic to my situation and treat me
as an individual. On the other hand, there is the ‘obtrusiveness trap’: too
much attention can be just as bad as being ignored.
But there are also people, who want exactly that: a maximum of care
and attention.
That is true, it is a fine balancing act. But if you work in a first class
hotel, the trick is to develop an accurate sense of what a guest wants. That
also includes showing me the hotel’s back entrance, where there will not
be twenty photographers waiting for me.
When it comes to hotels, are you happy to experiment, or do you
prefer going back to the same ones?
If I am happy with the service, I like being a loyal guest. I also prefer
dealing with the staff I have got to know, but you cannot really insist on
that.
When you travel privately, do you spoil yourself and take full advantage
of the luxurious facilities?
Yes, that has happened occasionally. I do pay attention to whether there
is a nice spa, and to what the restaurant and the bar are like.
Do you also recommend hotels to your friends?
Yes, I like doing that. After starring in the ‘Commissario Brunetti’ films,
I had a reputation as the ultimate expert on Venice, but paradoxically, I
had always stayed in a flat there and was in no position to make any
recommendations for hotels – but I was able to recommend restaurants.
Are you a spontaneous traveller, or do you like to plan well in advance?
In the past, I have quite frequently just set off, especially when travelling
by bicycle. I would set a specific time, say 5pm, and then start looking
for a place to spend the night.
Did that work out alright?
Not always, no. I discovered quite a few interesting places but some of
them turned out to be real catastrophes.
Are there any dream destinations you would still like to travel to?
There are not all that many left, but I would love to go back to the Arctic.
I shot a film there 15 years ago, and that experience has stayed with me.
So who picks the destinations for private trips in the Król family?
Well, I’m not very particular about where we go. If I am not immediately
sold on an idea, my curiosity usually gets the better of me, and I
think to myself: “OK, let’s check out what you’ve picked.”
Ferien im Steigenberger Grandhotel and Spa in Heringsdorf
Ostseeinsel Usedom Gäste des Steigenberger Grandhotel and Spa in Heringsdorf
Erzieherin in Kindertagesstätten. Was ist anders bei der Betreuung im
Krabbenclub?
dad? Frolicking around in the sea, collecting shells, building sandcastles
and defending them against the waves and the wind? It was great fun,
but only when the sun shone. On rainy days, of which there were many,
things were bleak. The whole family was bored, stuck in one room. There
was no TV, but instead the antics of an irritating, younger brother. And
finally: the dreaded announcement: “Put on your raincoats and Wellingtons.
Let’s get some fresh air. We’re going for a walk!” When we
whined discontentedly, Dad would say: “Other children don’t get to go
on a seaside holiday at all. You just don’t know how lucky you are!” And
he was right, at least when it was sunny.
Children today definitely get a better deal – at least at the Steigenberger
young guests aged three to twelve can just turn up and join in the fun
There is more than enough room. Two hundred square metres of
space, split across two floors, and an abundance of toys: dolls, cuddly
toys, diggers, a toyshop, a Punch and Judy show, a tepee, books and board
games. The flat screen TV remains off most of the time. “We don’t
really need it,” says the woman in charge, Monika Kroll who has nerves
of steel. Even hours of children charging about in the building leave her
unperturbed. It’s all a question of training: the qualified paediatric nurse
has been working as a nursery teacher for 25 years. So how is working at
the ‘Crayfish Club’ different? “The children are only here for a few hours
Monika Kroll. Some of the children need a gentle nudge to come out of
Every so often, the telephone rings in the children’s villa. It’s mum and
Ingrid Johnson, Director of
uns weiter verbessern.
Mobile internet use has been increasing, but what
are the implications of this for the hotel trade?
Steigenberger’s Director of revenue Management
& Distribution, ingrid Johnson, who is also responsible
for pricing, explains
Online booking portals have revolutionised the travel industry.
With just a few mouse clicks, travellers are able to compare prices
and check reviews by other hotel guests …
Yes, the internet has created transparency. For us, this means we have to
offer fair prices and promote these to our guests.
Hotel guests get irritated, if they are charged more for a room when
making a booking directly on the hotel’s website, rather than using a
booking portal.
That irritation is justified. We have to restore the trust clients have in
booking directly with us. At Steigenberger, we have been offering a ‘best
price guarantee’ for several years now. This means that by booking with
us directly, clients can be sure that they will be charged the best rate. The
industry as a whole faces a challenge regarding the discounted rates
which hotels grant to resellers, such as international travel companies,
and which then find their way onto online portals. We have agreed new
contractual conditions with our partners to prevent this from happening.
So will guests have to pay more in future?
No, certainly not. Our prices will continue to be based on supply and
demand, and on the services offered. It is important that we show our
guests that they will get the best price on the Steigenberger website, or
when booking in the hotel itself. If we did not take these steps, our credibility
would suffer.
These days, travellers often take their smartphones or tablet computers
with them, allowing them to make hotel bookings at the very last
minute.
Guests have become even more flexible when it comes to making bookings.
This is why in May 2011, we introduced m.steigenberger.com and
m.intercityhotels.com – the mobile versions of our hotel websites for the
iOS 4 and Android operating systems. These sites offer a convenient way
of booking directly with us, even on the go.
What has the response to these new booking tools been like so far?
We have received a lot of praise, particularly for the straightforward and
intuitive way the pages work. The number of users and bookings has
increased significantly, but is still quite low compared with the number
of bookings made via other portals. In the USA and the UK, people make
bookings via their mobile devices much more frequently, but I am convinced
that in Germany, too, there will be a marked increase in the near
future.
Reviews by guests play an important part in internet bookings. How
does Steigenberger react to such praise or criticism?
Naturally, these reviews are carefully monitored. Many of our hotels
make use of an internet tool to contact their guests regularly, and to
update them about reviews and other hotel information. We are keen to
receive feedback, so we can continue to improve the services we offer.
The woman left her wheeled suitcase on the purple carpet, just clear of the
sliding glass door. She approached one of the female hotel employees, oblivious
to the other guests who walked into the lobby behind her, forcing
them to navigate awkwardly around the obstacle. The woman behind the
reception desk was front office manager Linda Oberti. This meant, she was
in charge of all administrative matters, and responsible for virtually everything
that went on in the building: from supervising the head porters to dealing with difficult
guests, such as a certain Claus Bergfried. Bergfried, a club owner from Oldenburg, claimed
to have lost his credit card, and had gone on to accuse every single chambermaid of theft.
The blonde woman, who was dressed in black and presently standing in front of Oberti,
was not a regular guest. Neither did she have the right to put down her suitcase in the middle
of the foyer. Nevertheless, Linda Oberti smiled confidently –a smile similar to the one she had
worn earlier that morning, when she had explained to Claus Bergfried that if he had lost his
credit card, he would have to settle up using his debit card or cash.
“Do you have a reservation, madam?”
“A single room for two nights. For Sibylle Schenck.”
Two hours later, there was a knock on the door of room 369. Only moments before, Sibylle
Schenck had received a call from the reception informing her that a Dr. Robertsen was waiting
for her in the bar. “Tell him to come upstairs,” she had ordered brusquely.
She had never seen the man at the door before. “You’ve got the wrong room.” In her job as
an estate agent specialising in high-end real estate in Munich, Sibylle Schenck was used to
getting rid of people who she suspected were not viable clients. She pulled the belt of her
dressing gown tighter.
“It’s you who’s mistaken, ma’am,” said the man. “I’m here to commit your suicide.”
When housekeeper Susanne Biller found the dead woman, the latter was hanging, suspended
by the neck with the belt of her dressing gown, which had been tied to the curtain
rail. Thanks to the fact that Sibylle Schenck had been permanently on – and had stringently
stuck to – a diet, the rail had supported her weight, and had not broken in two. An armchair
lay on its side, in front of the window.
uns.
For executive housekeeper Biller and her colleagues, clearing up the traces of the incident
was scarcely more trouble than a regular tidy up in a room where uninhibited guests had left
behind all manner of dirt and chaos. Susa, as she was nicknamed by her colleagues, was wellknown,
and notorious, for her attention to detail. Her motto was: “You can never make up
for a missed opportunity.”
In the space of an hour, room 369 was back to looking as though nothing untoward had
happened.
No one mentioned the man who had knocked on Sibylle Schenck’s door. For the investigating
chief inspector, the motive for the act was clear: a jealous episode between the estate agent
and the married lawyer Dr. Robertsen.
“It’s terrible,” said Linda Oberti, sipping on her Mojito. She and Susa, who was also having
a Mojito, sat at one of the low, round tables in the bar, which was bathed in subdued light.
Rectangular mirrors adorned the walls.
“Our last cold departure was four months ago,” said Susa. “By the way, how did your
conversation with Felix go, this lunchtime?” When Linda Oberti started her job as the front
office manager in the hotel, Susa had immediately made her out to be a rival – not on a professional
level, but rather in relation to male guests of a certain age.
“Felix who?“ When she had started this job five years ago, Linda Oberti had considered
the somewhat overweight and often loudmouthed Susa a rival, especially in relation to those
men, who for whatever reason did not place too much importance on attractive slenderness.
“Dr. Robertsen,” said Susa.
Oberti stayed silent.
“You hired a contract killer to dispose of Sibylle and to make it look like suicide,” Susa said
calmly. “You wanted to punish Robertsen for dumping you so callously. You convinced him
to have lunch with you here at the bar, so that the killer was able to complete the assignment
undisturbed. I completely understand, Linda – I honestly do. The fancy lawyer from Berlin
dumped me, too. That was a while ago, before you started working here. So where do we go
from here?”
At first, there was a renewed silence. Then Linda Oberti slid down even further into the
gegenseitigen Vertrauen.
armchair. “I did not do anything, although I had every reason to.”
“You’re lying.”
“When that woman breezed into the lobby this morning, I knew immediately that she was
Robertsen’s latest conquest. He is so brazen, so ... Those two! I would have loved to.... What
makes you say that the woman was murdered? The police said quite categorically....”
“The police…” Susa lit a cigarette. Smoking was expressly permitted in this bar. “I was just
about to clean the bathroom of his junior suite once more for the evening, and I saw a bag
next to the bed. It was open and inside it, there were at least twenty thousand euros. Bloodmoney,
Linda.”
“And you thought I had given that to him? But Robertsen cannot have killed his lover, one
of the chambermaids saw him leave his suite.”
Her mobile phone rang. “Hello, Ms Oberti speaking... Yes, but he should have checked out
a long time ago... Where? In Dr Robertsen’s room? Oh God!”
Coincidentally, these were also the exact – and last – words falteringly uttered by Claus
Bergfried, the Oldenburg bar owner, as he lay on the immaculately clean, carpeted floor and
croaked “Oh God!”
According to the coroner’s report, Bergfried had ingested the highly toxic cleaning agent
Tirac-Plus in a glass of whiskey. The chemical had killed him in seconds. It had, however, not
been possible to establish how the poison had found its way into the open whiskey bottle,
which Dr. Robertsen had brought with him from the bar after lunch.
Maybe the lawyer had offered the shady nightclub owner money to eliminate his inconvenient
lover. After the act, Robertsen could have relieved Bergfried of the money again. Or,
Bergfried may have been hiding out in Robertsen’s suite after the murder, and Robertsen could
have stolen the cleaning agent from one of the supply cupboards. Maybe Susa and Linda were
also implicated in the killings. In the end, the two let all these speculation fizzle out – for
good.
In order to ensure the smooth running of a hotel business this complex, – on this front
office manager Oberti und executive housekeeper Biller were agreed like never before – two
elements were fundamental: unquestioning teamwork and absolute mutual trust.
Beer gardens are epicentres of Bavarian sociability and joie-de-vivre. But
when it is raining, this usually puts an end to the fun. Not so in the
Bavarian town of Bad Wörishofen. Here, the hustle and bustle in one
beer garden continues cheerfully 365 days a year, even in rainy weather.
This is because the ‘Steigenberger Hotel Der Sonnenhof’, which specialises
in wellness treatments and conferences, has just added another treat
to its repertoire: the King Ludwig Indoor Beer Garden. Protected from
the elements and under real trees, up to 100 guests sit on benches, which
feature leather seats and cow-skin upholstered backrests. It is a cosy way
to enjoy hearty Bavarian treats. Meanwhile, cool blue light, wood and
Was macht Hoteldesign unverwechselbar?
oft gleich: Budgetvorgaben, Designvorgaben, Gesetzesvorgaben, Zeitvorgaben
etwas Luxus tut immer gut.
*“Great hotels
What makes hotel design unmistakable? interior designer
cornelia Markus-diedenhofen showcases her trademark
style at two future steigenberger hotels in Berlin, and at
skilful, energetic, and both traditional and avant-garde
the most beautiful hotel builDings are conceived in dreams
and in the imagination. In the skies above Berlin, it is easy to design
stunning dream castles. But in the end, the plane is certain to land at one
of Berlin’s two airports, Tegel or Schönefeld: back on the ground, and
back to the harsh reality of budget and design specifications, legal frameworks
and deadlines. Naturally, Cornelia Markus-Diedenhofen is aware
of this. Despite her powerful imagination, her feet are firmly planted on
the ground.
For more than 25 years, she has been designing rooms for hotels, spas
and golf clubs. With her own office in the city of Reutlingen, and a team
of 22 employees, she is one of Germany’s leading interior designers specialising
in hotels. The reasons for her frequent air travel to Berlin are
currently twofold. She is responsible for the interior design of two Steigenberger
hotels. The Steigenberger Airport Hotel at the new Berlin
Brandenburg International airport (BER) will open its doors this summer,
while the grand opening of the centrally located ‘Steigenberger Hotel
and Resorts am Kanzleramt’ is scheduled for 2014.
Markus-Diedenhofen outlines the challenge: “Hotels have to serve a
multitude of different purposes, at different times, to meet the extraordinarily
varied needs and desires of very diverse people.” The Steigenberger
Airport Hotel Berlin will predominantly house conference and
meeting delegates, and guests on layovers. Statistically, the length of the
average stay will be just over one night. So, there is not much time to
ensure guests fully experience the excellent Steigenberger hospitality. The
hotel’s design cleverly takes this into account, for example in the rooms
themselves. The fittings are functional and practical, but feature a lively
Doch
Stadtteile wachsen langsam. Das Steigenberger Hotel and Resort am
Kanzleramt muss also selbst genug Attraktionen bieten und Ausstrahlung
geben. Die Thomaskirche, in der Johann Sebastian Bach einst als Kantor
wirkte, liegt in der Nachbarschaft, ebenso Auerbachs Keller, legendärer
Schauplatz in Goethes „Faust“. Das Design im Handelshof zieht daraus
interplay of colours, shapes and materials. After all, no one wants to be
in boring surroundings, and a bit of luxury never goes amiss.
This is especially true for the interior designer’s second project in
Berlin. It is a luxury hotel with spacious spa and conference facilities,
which will be located in the so-called ‘Europacity’ quarter, close to the
city’s main railway station and the Chancellery. The 40-hectare ‘Europacity’
area has been earmarked to become an attractive new business
and residential district. But because neighbourhoods grow only slowly,
the ‘Steigenberger Hotel and Resort am Kanzleramt’ will have to offer a
captivating atmosphere and a sufficient number of attractions to draw in
visitors. “Top hotels are more and more frequently the actual destination
of a trip,” says Markus-Diedenhofen. They can be islands of calm, relaxation
and indulgence. Some guests would prefer not to leave this island
at all, but have to, because they are on a business trip. So, they look forward
to coming ‘home’ in the evening. However, this ‘second home’
should not resemble their actual home – that’s not what sophisticated
travellers are in the market for. Cornelia Markus-Diedenhofen is certain
of one thing: “Great hotels tell a unique and distinctive story. The principal
challenge for hoteliers and hotel designers is to unearth this story
and to turn it into an experience for the guests.”
In Leipzig, she has already achieved this objective with her
design of the luxurious ‘Steigenberger Grandhotel Handelshof‘, which
opened in the spring of 2011. In collaboration with an artist, the interior
designer cleverly combined the history of the city of Leipzig, and that of
the historic ‘Handelshof’ trade fair building. The luxurious ‘Grandhotel’
is located in one of the extraordinary former trade fair buildings, which
to this day imbue Leipzig’s city centre with its special atmosphere. The
*Spacious privacy: The President’s suite at the ‘Steigenberger Grandhotel Handelshof’ is an attic apartment on two levels
findet man lokale Motive.
in Kontakt kommen, reden, Gedanken austauschen“, sagt Cornelia
Markus-Diedenhofen.
church of St Thomas, where Bach was once choirmaster is also in the
neighbourhood, as is the cavernous restaurant ‘Auerbachs Keller’, the
legendary setting of Goethe’s play about Faust. The design of the ‘Handelshof’
draws inspiration from a wealth of sources: passages of text and
musical notation from Bach’s passions, quotes from ‘Faust’, busts of Felix
Mendelssohn, musical instrument details and local motifs, even on fabric
and cloth. “I think it is important to recall the traditions of the hotel, the
city or the region,” says Cornelia Markus-Diedenhofen, who herself was
born in Leipzig. “But one should not be immobilised by one’s admiration
for the past. The real skill lies in creating an atmosphere, in which guests
will still feel comfortable in ten years’ time.”
Ideally speaking, this does not only apply to those guests who actually
stay in the hotel. “Like traditional coffee houses, hotels are places
where people meet, talk and exchange ideas”, says Cornelia Markus-
Diedenhofen. “The hotels that fascinate me most are those which reflect
and represent the societal and cultural life of a city while at the same time
contributing to its flair, and so become part of its self-image,” she explains.
“The city shapes the hotel, and vice-versa. The two are in constant
dialogue with each other.”
In Leipzig, this dialogue between hotel and city is already in full flow.
The hotel is a venue for art exhibitions and a rest stop for tired shoppers.
The bar in the impressive atrium, the brasserie and the ‘Vinothek Le
Grand’ wine bar have long become popular meeting places. “We interior
designers only create the stage on which the team of hotel employees can
turn its vision and ambitions into reality,” says Cornelia Markus-Diedenhofen.
“But if the cocktails are bad, even the most spectacular bar is
useless.” She is right, of course. Nevertheless, the stage is important, too.
If a play is incompatible with the stage on which it is being performed,
its success will be limited.
*The view of the Rhine valley from the hotel terrace has been enjoyed by emperors, queens, chancellors and presidents. The
luxurious ‘Grandhotel’ was a top destination for couples tying the knot long before 1995, when Formula 1 idol Michael
Schumacher married his fiancée Corinna here. It still is today. St Peter’s chapel, built in 1764, is a jewel of the baroque era,
and the rotunda is one of several halls, which turn a wedding into a real celebration for a few, select guests or a wedding
party of 500. On request, the ‘Grandhotel’ team can make all the arrangements: from table decorations to wedding cakes.
Four-course gala menu and one night’s stay in a suite for the happy couple from 179 euros per person.
steigenberger inselhotel, konstanz
verbindet. Der Festsaal des Steigenberger Inselhotels
war einst das Kirchenschiff eines 1235 gegründeten
Dominikanerklosters. Heute bietet er Platz für 80 bis
220 Gäste. Die Hochzeitsmappe des Steigenberger
Inselhotels enthält zahlreiche Menüvorschläge und
außerdem nützliche Adressen für alle Brautleute, die
das Arrangement von Blumen, Musik oder Ausflü-
gen auf dem Bodensee selbst planen wollen.
*There could hardly be a more romantic way to
spend your wedding day: on an island in Lake Constance,
and in a hotel, which combines Mediterranean
flair with time-honoured history. The banqueting
hall of the ‘Steigenberger Inselhotel’ was once the
nave of a Dominican monastery founded in 1235,
and today offers room for 80 to 220 guests. The hotel’s
wedding portfolio contains numerous menu
suggestions, and useful contacts for those couples
who would like to make their own arrangements for
flowers, music and excursions on Lake Constance.
*Is it possible to make a beautiful wedding even more
special? You can certainly extend the celebration – by
spending your honeymoon at the ‘Steigenberger Al
but there are good reasons for staying in. That’s because
the management has special gifts for newlyweds:
on the day they arrive, they are served a welcome
drink, a fruit platter and a special honeymoon
cake in their room. Later, a romantic five-course candlelight
dinner awaits them in ‘Alexanders Restaurant’.
*Dresden’s famous Frauenkirche cathedral and the
