Ein-Frau-Plattenfi rma.
Gerade ist sie in Botswanas Hauptstadt
Gaborone zurückgekehrt. »Ich habe die
letzten Jahre in Südafrika gelebt – und werde
wahrscheinlich in den nächsten Jahren
zwischen beiden Ländern pendeln«, sagt
The small woman with the closecropped
hair has brought a backup.
Six muscle-bound young men who look like
thugs, who like to perform with bare upper
bodies—but who make African a capella
music. Th ey call themselves Dikakapa, »Th e
Giants.« Th ey’re Zenzele’s latest discovery.
Th e young woman with the broad smile
and the upbeat demeanor is the country’s
most important music manager. She discov-
ers artists, organizes concerts, has posters
printed and records tapes, CDs and DVDs.
She’s a one-woman record label.
She has just returned to Botswana’s capital,
Gaborone. »I spent the last few years
living in South Africa—and will probably
commute between the two countries in the
future,« says the 27-year-old. »Botswana
Die Talentsucherin
Botswana (1): Zenzele Hirschfeld entdeckt die Popstars von morgen
die 27-Jährige. »Botswana ist meine Heimat,
aber hier passiert nicht allzu viel.« Ihre
Freundin Veronika nickt. Auch sie hat viele
Jahre in Johannesburg gewohnt, bis sie zurückkam
und einen Beautysalon im Zentrum
von Gaborone eröff nete. »In Botswana ist das
Leben easy«, sagt Zenzele. »Man muss sich
keine Sorgen machen, wenn man um zehn
Uhr abends vor die Tür geht.« Und wenn man
wisse, wo, ginge sogar die Post ab!
Auch wenn Gaborone oft allzu ruhig
wirkt: An jeder Straßenecke hängen handgemalte
Plakate, auf denen das nächste
Konzert oder die nächste Party angekündigt
wird. Vor allem Gospel und traditionelle
Musik sind beliebt, aber natürlich auch
Kwaito – diese Mischung aus HipHop und
afrikanischer Musik, so erklärt die Musikmanagerin,
als wir im Sonnenuntergang
Th e Talent Scout
is my home, but nothing much happens
here.« Her friend Veronika nods. She, too,
spent many years in Johannesburg until
she returned and opened a beauty salon
in downtown Gaborone. »In Botswana life
is easy,« says Zenzele. »You don’t have to
worry about going out after 10 p.m.« And
if you know where to go, you’ll even fi nd
where the action is!
Gaborone may often appear all too quiet.
Yet hand-painted advertisements hang at
every street corner announcing the next
concert or party. Gospel and traditional mu-
sic, in particular, are popular, but of course
also kwaito—a mix of hip-hop and African
music, Zenzele explains as we stroll down
the shopping street at sunset. Th e vendors
pack up their trays and tables off ering CDs
durch die Einkaufsstraße schlendern. Die
Händler packen ihre Bauchläden und Verkaufstische
ein, mit den CDs von Zenzeles
Künstlern. Woher ihr ungewöhnlicher
Nachname stammt? »Das dachte ich mir,
dass dich das interessiert!«, sagt sie lachend.
Und erzählt, wie ihr deutscher Urgroßvater
im frühen 20. Jahrhundert mit dem Schiff
in Südafrika landete und nach fruchtbaren
Böden im Norden suchte. Die fand er zwar
nicht, aber er blieb trotzdem.
Seine Urenkelin ruft uns am Abend noch
einmal an. Sie hat auf die Schnelle ein Treffen
mit dem größten Popstar Botswanas
organisieren können: mit Stompi, einem
zwölf Jahre alten Kwaito-Sänger aus dem
Nachbarort Kanye. »Das beste an Gaborone
ist«, sagt Zenzele, »dass man hier immer
weiß, was der andere gerade macht.« jkb
Botswana (1): Zenzele Hirschfeld discovers the pop stars of tomorrow
by Zenzele’s artists. What is the origin of
her unusual last name? »I thought that you
would be interested to know!« she says,
laughing. She goes on to tell the story of her
German great-grandfather who stepped off
a boat in South Africa in the early 1900s and
looked for fertile soil in the north. He didn’t
fi nd it, but stayed nonetheless.
His great-granddaughter calls us once
again that night. She managed to quickly
arrange a meeting for us with Botswana’s
greatest pop star, Stompi, a twelve-yearold
kwaito singer from the neighboring
town of Kanye. »Th e best thing about Gaborone,«
says Zenzele, »is that you always
know what the other person is doing that
very moment.« jkb
