Fiesta Mexicana
An Mexikos Pazifi k-Küste entsteht eine gigantische Ferienstadt. Sie könnte Cancún wie ein
kleines Hafendorf aussehen lassen A gigantic vacation center is rising on Mexico’s Pacifi c
coast. It could end up making Cancún look like a little harbor town
Buchten! Die Klippenspringer! Erinnert sich jemand an den Film
Until now, no one has paid much attention to Sinaloa, a
Mexican state bordering on the Pacifi c coast. From October to
mid-November, the state hosts the »Fiesta des los Artes,« a cultural
festival featuring new talent. But otherwise? Nothing much hap-
pening there? Nonsense! In early 2009, an historic groundbreaking
ceremony is due to take place near the small town of Teacapán
on the Sinaloa coast. It will mark the start of construction of a $7
billion luxury vacation center, scheduled for completion in 2025.
Th ink Dubai. For Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderón, this is »the
most important tourism project in 25 years.«
For ages, this state known for its mariachi bands and tequila
had attracted mostly nostalgic tourists—visitors who raved about
Acapulco, the coastal city 1,000 kilometers south of Teacapán that
was so popular among Hollywood stars in the 1950s, earning a
reputation for glamour and special status on the map. Oh, those
bays! Oh, those cliff divers! Does anyone remember the movie »Fun
in Acapulco« (1963), in which lead actor Elvis Presley croons that
