The remaining 24 % of total shipments were accounted for by household and chemical/technical products (11 %), pharmaceuticals (5 %), food (3 %) and other products (5 %). In the food sector which increased by about 17 % the aluminium aerosol can benefitted from several new applications such as vegetable oils or gelatine spray. In 2009 order income has significantly decreased in the first quarter because customers are largely destocking. Short-term orders and smaller runs require utmost flexibility from aluminium aerosol can producers. Boliden maintains reduced copper production 15 April 2009 - With reference to the continued weak market situation, Boliden is maintaining the previously announced cuts in copper production. The production reductions announced on 30th January 2009 entailed the production of copper metal being reduced by ca. 68,000 t, on an annual basis, during the first quarter of 2009. Boliden is maintaining this reduction going forward. The cuts in production affect the copper smelters at Rönnskär in Sweden and Harjavalta in Finland with possible temporary lay-offs at Harjavalta. The Boliden Group produced approximately 350,000 t of copper in 2008. Stainless steel for chemical tankers 30 March 2009 - Outokumpu has signed a contract with Yangzi Shipbuilding Industry in China to deliver the stainless steel special grade Duplex 2205 to four ships of 3 600 DWT each. The ships will be carrying acids, for example phosphoric and sulphuric acids. The contract includes a total of 1,200 tons of stainless steel plate that will be used to manufacture the big tanks inside the ships. The deliveries will take METALL | 63. April 2009 - During the first quarter of 2009 Outokumpu‘s deliveries of stainless steel declined by 45% to 247,000 tons in the first quarter compared to the rather normal first quarter of 2008. Outokumpu‘s sales fell by a remarkable 60% to EUR 679 million in the first quarter. Due to the very low delivery volumes and low base prices, Outokumpu‘s underlying operational result was negative at EUR 134 million. Additionally, there were raw material related inventory losses of some EUR 110 million resulting in an operating loss of EUR 249 million. Outokumpu‘s cost saving programmes are proceeding according to plan. Including also the latest actions Outokumpu estimates that total fixed cost savings will be in excess of EUR 100 million in 2009. Visibility concerning the stainless steel market continues to be short. Outokumpu expects its secondquarter underlying operational loss to be at the same level or slightly smaller than in the first quarter. Erstmals kommt in Toranagallu ein von Siemens VAI entwickelter Fliehkraftabscheider zur Gichtgasreinigung zum Einsatz. Mit dieser Lösung kann die Effizienz der Staubabscheidung flexibel gesteuert werden. Dies maximiert die Rückgewinnung des eisenhaltigen Staubs und vermeidet eine übermäßige Konzentration von Zink oder anderen schweren Elementen im zurückgeführten Staub.
