Sassnitz – Harbour City by the National Park
Sassnitz harbour city is special on Rügen. The lively harbour with its modern
pedestrian bridge and historical cutters still proves the close relationship of the
islanders with the sea. In the early morning visitors may watch fishermen offering
their fresh catch directly from the cutter. The outer mole is the longest in
Europe and leads 1,5km out into the sea. The harbour is the starting point for
cruising boats leaving to the chalk cliffs or the Baltic seaside resorts. But Sassnitz
also is the entrance to Jasmund national park. Its old beech forests became part
of UNESCO world heritage in 2012. Their fresh green and tender blossoms attract
numerous nature lovers in spring. All the year around unspoilt woods and
the Bodden scenery with its tumuli, manor houses and hidden orchid meadows
are a worthwhile destination. The chalk cliffs may be visited on a stroll along a
picturesque cliff from Sassnitz. In Klementelvitz the chalk is still quarried today
and prepared as „Rugian Healing Chalk“. The chalk museum in Gummanz documents
the mining and use of the natural material. From all over Europe stone
connoisseurs come to Sassnitz to search for fossils on the stone beaches. In the
historical quarters of the city with its narrow lanes, flights of stairways and little
walls, one still feels the charm of times gone by. There are cafés and restaurants,
galleries and artisans’ studios or the cosy Christmas market to visit. Being the
second largest city on Rügen isle, there are many little shops in Sassnitz.
