Der Leiter des Instituts fürKryptographie und Sicherheit am Karlsruher Institutfür Technologie (KIT) weiß die Antwort. Kryptographieist die Wissenschaft von der Verschlüsselung vonInformationen und dabei geht es heute längst nichtmehr um Geheimschriften, sondern um die Technikder Informationssicherheit. Einen Einblick in diekryptographischen Prinzipien bekamen die Besucherder Ausstellung „Kryptologikum“ im Zentrum fürKunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe (ZKM), dieim Juni im Rahmen des großen WissenschaftsfestivalsEFFEKTE 2013 stattfand. Erstmals hatten alle wissenschaftlichenInstitutionen in Karlsruhe – 17 Forschungseinrichtungenund neun Hochschulen – ihreAktivitäten gebündelt und die Stadt für neun Tage inein großes Mitmach-Labor verwandelt. Eine Initiative,die vom Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaftim finalen Wettbewerb zur „Stadt der Wissenschaft“ausgezeichnet wurde.» Das KIT ist der größte ArbeitgeberIn seinen 298 Jahren Stadtgeschichte hat sich Karlsruhevon der Residenzstadt zum Zentrum einer Technologieregionentwickelt. Zahlreiche wissenschaftlicheEinrichtungen, darunter drei Fraunhofer-Institute,das FIZ Karlsruhe für Informationstransfer und Wissensmanagementund das Max Rubner-Institut fürErnährungsforschung, machen die Stadt im Südwestenvon Baden-Württemberg zum Treffpunkt für Forscheraus aller Welt. Von den 291.000 Einwohnernsind 40.000 Studierende und 24.000 von ihnen studierenam KIT. Es entstand 2009 aus der Fusion der UniversitätKarlsruhe mit dem Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe(FZK), einem Großforschungszentrum derHelmholtz-Gemeinschaft.
