EUROPAN 11
„Hof-Nachbarn“, „RadlerInn“, „Selb selber gemeinsam“
REPORT ON THE JURY MEETING
Public spaces are intentionally narrowed with green
elements and the issue of porcelain is brought into the
street space with “Selbsicht”, the “White Band” and
workshops such as “Marias Mantel”. A new porcelain
museum may entice people to stay! A heated debate
was carried out concerning whether the multitude of
buildings, public and semi-public squares and courtyards
might create heterogeneities within the open
spaces designed.
Selb is to be further developed from the many networked
proposals of the restructuring management for
private owners and the municipality itself – also taking
over existing urban concepts. The special innovation
of the Selbland project lies in its programmatic
realisation. A collection of events is proposed (such as
“White Weeks” and much more), showing a complex
understanding of the utilisation management of a city.
This kind of management has to be established as a
long-term process in order to successfully revive urban
society.
The special innovation of this project lies in the programmatic
realisation of a time-controlled model of a city,
which works with itself and opens up new perspectives
for the city of Selb from itself. The authors work with
genuine patches, avoid kitsch and consider buildings
such as “Hof-Nachbarn”, “RadlerInn”, “Selb selber gemeinsam”
with a modern attitude in the regional context.
WG 101 SLEEPING BEAUTY
The project goes back to the industrialised past of the
city of Selb as a production location for porcelain. The
“city of white gold” is convincingly presented in a valuable
way applying various measures and strategies.
Conclusions are drawn for the city’s core area on the
basis of superordinate structural measures for traffic
routing, the development of a multi-functional park in
the environment of the porcelain factory and a city park
alongside the renaturalised Selb River.
The re-used porcelain factory is to function as an
art, cultural, recreational and trade centre creating a
nucleus for further development. This new use will be
supplemented by architectonic acupunctures set into
the urban context in a targeted way. The proposed individual
measures will be linked within the public space
as a so-called “porcelain route”, which will be clearly
carved out in the layout plan, but also leaving questions
of spatial design open. The authors consciously do without
detailed statements concerning open space design
and landscaping in their plans.
The proposal deliberately focuses on activating existing
buildings and a few new prominent structures. New
