– Cornberg Plant – Werk Cornberg
The Cornberg plant is located
in the centre of Germany in the
district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg.
It covers a total area of approx.
19,000 m 2 , 8,000 m 2 thereof
are production area.
Rapid growth.
In 1970 started the first construction
phase of the plant. It commenced
its production with only
12 employees which was followed
by a rapid growth. Initially, the
Cornberg plant produced lamp cases
made of glass-fibre reinforced
plastic (GRP), but its production
capacities were rapidly enhanced
and the number of employees increased
as well. In 1972, this number
had risen to 100 employees.
After the completion of the second
and third construction phases in
1973, the plant had sufficient production
area to increase its capacity:
25 presses were in operation
as early as in 1974. And in 1976,
the plant exceeded the threshold
of 1,000 tons of processed SMC
resin mats.

After a reorientation and to
strengthen the location after the
difficulties in 2002, the Cornberg
plant was extended to become
the spare-part centre for automotive
and vehicle parts as this
plant was ideally suited to handle
small batches.
As a first measure, one major
press with a closing pressure of
1,250 tons was transferred from
the headquarters in Bretten to
Cornberg.
This was followed by the extension
of the production and storage
area as well as the office area
which was urgently necessary.
These measures ensured a longterm
production in Cornberg.
In addition to industry products
and the spare part production for
the automotive sector, the moulded
parts manufacturer in Cornberg
also manufactures telescopic
shaft covers in series production
for the VW A5 platform and MAN
mudguards for the TGA truck.
Today, 60 % of the turnover is generated
in the automotive sector
and 40 % in the non-automotive
sector.

The EURO from Cornberg.
During the past year, Cornberg
mainly produced lamps, covers
for forklift trucks and distribution
boxes, but also approx. 1.3 million
screens p.a. as well as several engine
undershields and bumpers for
the automotive industry. However,
there are one or more surprises
in the product program. In 1999,
specialists from Cornberg made
an important contribution to the
campaign for the introduction of
the Euro. The plant lead the production
of 1,000 gigantic Euro
coins with a diameter of 1.80 meters
which were painted both by
important artists and children in
the 12 countries, where the Euro
was introduced, and those coins
were later auctioned with the
proceeds going to children suffering
from cancer. 111 of these
designer Euros were sold as pieces
of art all over the world, among
them the Euro from the Cornberg
plant which had been designed by
children of the elementary school
in Cornberg and the artist Paul-
Martin Jähde. EURO-Welt is the
biggest project for children suffering
from cancer and the biggest
art project in the public area in
Europe.
Der Standort Cornberg befindet
sich in der Mitte von
Deutschland und liegt im Kreis
Hersfeld-Rotenburg.
Die gesamte Fläche beträgt
ca. 19.000 m 2 davon sind ca.
8.000 m 2 Produktionsfläche.
Rasantes Wachstum.
Mit dem ersten Bauabschnitt des
Werkes wurde 1970 begonnen.
Nach Aufnahme der Produktion
mit gerade mal 12 Mitarbeitern
folgte ein rasantes Wachstum.
Die Produktionskapazitäten für
Leuchtengehäuse aus glasfaserverstärktem
Kunststoff (GFK), die
ersten Produkte aus Cornberg,
wurden rasch ausgebaut, und
auch die Mitarbeiterzahl stieg mit
an. 1972 waren bereits über 100
Mitarbeiter hier beschäftigt.
Nach Vollendung des zweiten
und dritten Bauabschnitts 1973
standen auch wieder genügend
Flächen zur weiteren Produktionssteigerung
zur Verfügung:
1974 waren bereits 25 Pressen in
Betrieb. 1976 wurde erstmal die
1000 Tonnen Grenzen bei verarbeiteten
SMC-Harzmatten überschritten.
Um den Standort, nach den
Schwierigkeiten im Jahr 2002, zu
festigen, wurde durch eine Neuorientierung
das Werk Cornberg
als Ersatzteilzentrum für Automotive-
und Fahrzeugteile ausgebaut,
da dieses Werk optimal
mit kleinen Losgrößen umgehen
konnte.
Als erste Maßnahme wurde Ende
2002 eine Großpresse mit 1.250-
Tonnen-Schließkraft vom Stammhaus
Bretten an den Standort
Cornberg verlagert.
Darauf folgte die dringend erforderliche
Erweiterung der Produktions-
und Lagerflächen sowie des
Bürotraktes. Mit diesen Maßnahmen
konnte die Produktion am
Standort Cornberg langfristig abgesichert
werden.
Neben Industrieprodukten und
der Ersatzteilproduktion für den
Automotive-Bereich werden im
Formteilwerk Cornberg Gelenkwellenabschirmungen
als Serienaufträge
für die VW A5 Plattform
und MAN Kotflügel für den LKW
TGA gefertigt.
Der Umsatz beträgt heute 60 %
für den Automotive-Bereich und
40 % für den Non-Automotive-
Bereich.

Der Kunde im Mittelpunkt.
Kundenorientierung und daraus
resultierende größtmögliche Kundenzufriedenheit
haben heute einen
Spitzenplatz in der Rangliste
der Unternehmensziele. Durch
marktgerechte Innovationen und
ein Höchstmaß an Schnelligkeit
und Flexibilität gilt es, dieses Unternehmensziel
abzusichern.

für uns, die Standards hinsichtlich
Kosten, Qualität und Produktivität
zu definieren.“
Der EURO aus Cornberg.
In den letzten Jahren wurden in
Cornberg hauptsächlich Leuchten,
Verkleidungen für Flurförderfahrzeuge
und Verteilerschränke, aber
auch ca. 1,3 Mio. Abschirmungen
p.a. sowie diverse Dämpfungswannen
und Stoßfänger für die
Automobilindustrie produziert.
Aber die eine oder andere Überraschung
fand sich auch im Produktprogramm.
1999 leisteten die
Spezialisten aus Cornberg einen
wichtigen Beitrag zur Kampagne
anlässlich der Euro-Einführung.
Unter ihrer Federführung wurden
1.000 Riesen-Euros mit einem
Durchmesser von 1,80 Metern
produziert, die in den 12 Euro-
Ländern sowohl von bedeutenden
Künstlern als auch von Kindern
bemalt und zugunsten krebskranker
Kinder versteigert wurden.
111 von diesen gestalteten Euros
gingen als Kunstwerke in die ganze
Welt, unter diesen befand sich
auch der Euro vom Werk Cornberg,
der von der Grundschule Cornberg
und dem Künstler Paul-Martin
Jähde gestaltet wurde. EURO-
Welt ist das größte Projekt für
krebskranke Kinder und das größte
Kunstprojekt im öffentlichen
Raum Europas.
