This public forum presents outcomes from Studiolab: a synergistic network
inspiring new approaches to environmental, technological and social
challenges and providing a template for innovative art science collaborations.
Studiolab involves interaction between 13 leading centres of scientific
research, artistic excellence and experimental design across 12 European

eine völlig andere Herangehensweise an diese Aufgabe.
The first panel on Sunday will focus on the technical challenges involved
in designing musical instruments for people with special needs. Innovative
input and concepts make possible completely new approaches to
assignments of this type.

Ars Electronica conducts several artist-in-residence programs. They

nominees. Ars Electronica will also unveil its new scientist- and artist-

Ars Electronica Futurelab is not only mastering an enormous challenge; it’s
also—above all—launching a new mode of 3D visualization.

Immer mehr Menschen ist es ein Anliegen, in verantwortungsvoll geplanten
und verwalteten Städten zu leben. Wer mitgestalten will, ist allerdings
gefordert, sich entsprechend zu informieren – in der gegenwärtigen
Informationsgesellschaft eine schier unerfüllbare Aufgabe. Accountability
Technologies schaffen inmitten der Informationsflut neue Möglichkeiten,
wichtigen politischen und ökologischen Fragen die eigene Lebenswelt
betreffend nachzugehen. Dabei handelt es sich beispielsweise um freie
Visualisierungs-, Analyse- und Messwerkzeuge. Mit ihrer Hilfe können die
AktivistInnen die für ihr Engagement unerlässlichen Daten etwa zu Lärm,
Umweltverschmutzung, Mobilität oder Korruption erheben und darstellen.
Sensing Place/Placing Sense, ein Symposium zu neuen experimentellen
Technologien im Kontext Stadt, präsentiert in seiner zweiten Ausgabe
wirksame Initiativen und wirft u. a. die Frage auf, wie Informationen aufbereitet
sein müssen, um den Hebel der Veränderung im Verwaltungsapparat
ansetzen zu können.
More and more people highly value living in a city that is responsibly planned
and administered. Be that as it may, those who want to have a say in
how things are have to acquire the pertinent information, which is quite a
daunting task in today’s Information Society. Amidst this unmanageable
deluge of data, accountability technologies are creating new possibilities
for a person to look into important political and economic issues that affect
the place in which he/she lives. Examples are free tools for measurement,
visualization and analysis that enable activists to gather and depict data
indispensible to a campaign in connection with, say, noise, environmental
pollution, mobility or corruption. The second session of Sensing Place/
Placing Sense, a symposium about new experimental technologies
applicable to city life, focuses on effective initiatives. One question it raises
is how information has to be prepared in order to be able to trigger change
within governmental agencies.
