u Die Großstädterin Ciao Ciao kommt ursprünglich vom Land und stattet
ihren Eltern einen Besuch in der bergigen Provinz Yunnan ab. Noch glaubt
sie, sie käme bald wieder zurück in die Stadt. Bis dahin vertreibt sie sich die
Zeit mit Sprachnachrichten an ihre Freundin aus der Megalopole Kanton,
mit der sie nach ihrer Rückkehr einen eigenen Laden eröffnen will. Doch
je länger sie sich in dem Kaff aufhält, desto mehr wird Ciao Ciaos Uniform
aus Louis-Vuitton-Tasche, Heels und Hermès-Tuch vor der quietschgrünen
Landschaft zur Farce. Nur der Friseur, der aus Kanton stammt, scheint sie
zu verstehen. Als Ciao Ciao sich mit Li Wei, dem nichtsnutzigen, meist
betrunkenen Sohn eines Maisschnaps-Herstellers einlässt – eine Verbindung,
die ihre Mutter und Li Weis Vater zu forcieren suchen –, nimmt ein
Drama im Stil eines Tennessee Williams seinen Lauf.
Für das Porträt der unzufriedenen Ciao Ciao, die sich mit aller Kraft gegen
die Provinz wehrt und doch von ihr verschluckt wird, kontrastiert Song
Chuan die Weite der Natur mit den Gesichtern der Handelnden und findet
so eine mächtige Bildsprache. In der Idylle lauert ein gefährlicher Frust,
der nur den richtigen Anlass sucht, um auszubrechen.
Song Chuan Geboren 1980 in der südchinesischen Provinz Yunnan. 2006 schloss er sein
Filmstudium an der National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Peking ab und begann,
als Autor und Regisseur für das Fernsehen zu arbeiten. Sein erster Spielfilm HUAN HUAN,
den er mit Laiendarstellern aus seinem Heimatdorf drehte, lief auf chinesischen und
internationalen Filmfestivals wie dem New Directors/New Films in New York. CIAO
CIAO, sein erster professionell produzierter Spielfilm, wurde vom World Cinema Fund
gefördert und auf dem L’Atelier de la Cinéfondation in Cannes präsentiert.

City girl Ciao Ciao’s roots are in the country where she is
paying her parents a visit. She’s confident that she will
be returning to the city soon. Until then she is killing
time texting her girlfriend in the megalopolis, Kanton.
Together, they are planning to open up a shop of their
own. But the longer she spends in this little backwater,
the more her standard outfit of Louis Vuitton bag, heels
and a Hermès scarf begins to look like a joke against
the vividly green landscape. The local hairdresser, who
comes from Kanton, would seem to be the only one
who understands her. When she gets involved with Li
Wei, the good-for-nothing, mostly inebriated son of a
corn whiskey distiller – a connection that her mother
and Li Wei’s father would seem to have engineered
– a drama à la Tennessee Williams begins to take its
course. Contrasting the wide expanse of the landscape
with the faces of the protagonists, Song Chuan has
found a powerful visual language for his portrait of the
dissatisfied Ciao Ciao who struggles against rural life,
but finds herself sucked in by it. In this seeming idyll
there lurks a dangerous sense of frustration that is just
waiting for an opportunity to burst out.
Song Chuan Born in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan in
1980, he graduated with a masters in filmmaking from the National
Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing in 2006. He then began
writing and directing films and documentaries for television. His
debut feature HUAN HUAN was made with non-professional actors
from his home village and screened at Chinese and international
film festivals including New Directors/New Films in New York. His
first professionally-produced feature CIAO CIAO was supported
by the World Cinema Fund and also took part in the L’Atelier de la
Cinéfondation in Cannes.
Bacon sizzling in fat, a young woman thanking the
subscribers of her YouTube channel, a corpse neatly
wrapped up in black garbage bags and floating down a
river – as clear as the first few images of Travis Mathews’
mystery thriller may be, the connections only become
clearer gradually, as if they were emerging from the
subconscious. This elliptically edited story, which
revolves around a man who can no longer be described
as young, is accompanied by an eerie soundscape.
Filmmaker Alex lives in a van. He sets up his camera
in rural areas in the US and in the no-man’s land
near highways. During a visit to his mother, a former
alcoholic, she shares with him a well-kept secret.
There is also a small boy, with whom Alex develops
an unexpectedly close relationship. Director Mathews
chronicles a modern day gay existence in the West –
from anonymous sex to heterosexual porn in a sex bar
cabin, or as a service in a motel room. A small house and
a life on the margins of society. Meanwhile, on the radio,
we are treated to a steady stream of right-wing slogans
against everything that is not white and heterosexual,
here in Texas.
Travis Mathews Born in Ohio, USA in 1975, this director,
screenwriter, editor and producer with a background in psychology
has primarily concentrated on topics such as masculinity and
intimacy between homosexual men. He collaborated with James
Franco on the docu-fiction INTERIOR.LEATHER BAR which screened
at over 75 international festivals, including the Berlinale and in
Rotterdam. His 2012 debut feature film I WANT YOUR LOVE about
a group of gay friends in San Francisco premiered at the Frameline
Film Festival and has been shown at numerous other international
festivals.

Abonnenten ihres YouTube-Kanals bedankt, eine in schwarzen Mülltüten
sauber verschnürte Leiche, die den Fluss hinuntertreibt – so klar die ersten
Bilder in Travis Mathews‘ Mystery-Thriller auch sein mögen, schälen sich
die Zusammenhänge doch erst langsam und wie aus dem Unbewussten
heraus. Die elliptisch montierte Geschichte, die um einen nicht mehr ganz
jungen Mann kreist, ist mit einem unheimlichen Soundteppich unterlegt:
Der Filmemacher Alex lebt in einem Van und stellt seine Kamera in ländlichen
Regionen der USA im Niemandsland an den Highways auf. Als er
seine ehemals alkoholabhängige Mutter besucht, erfährt er von ihr ein
gut gehütetes Geheimnis. Und es gibt einen kleinen Jungen, zu dem Alex
eine unerwartet intensive Beziehung aufbaut. Regisseur Mathews ist
der Chronist einer schwulen, westlichen Moderne – von anonymem Sex
zu Heteropornos in der Kabine oder als Dienstleistung im Zimmer eines
Motels. Ein kleines Haus, eine Existenz am Rande der Gesellschaft, im Radio
hört man immer wieder die rechten Parolen gegen alles, was nicht weiß
und heterosexuell ist, hier in Texas.
