- Reitsport in Namibia -
Being a member of the
Reitverein Omaruru
for over 40 years, I have
many happy memories of the
past, which I think would interest
all sports people especially
horse lovers.
Omaruru was a club which
would organise very social
occasions like „Reitsonntag”
at all members, who owned
farms and preferably, also riding
horses. Among these persons
to host these very memorable
Sundays, were the late
Mr Klink, the late Jochen Roemer,
Mr Griebel, Klaus Erbslöh,
who was chairman of the
club at that time, but now resides
in Germany. Other hosts
were Mr Khan of the Guest
Farm Etemba, the Family Denis
Lang hosted many such
occasions, also Family Kollmitz
and lastly some of these
happy days were at the club in
Omaruru.
The day would start off with,
if held at a farm hosting, Rudolf
Scherer, who then owned
a transport business, would
load all horses from town to
the farm. The day would continue,
with all riders partaking
in an outride, would saddle up
their mounts, or mounts borrowed
from the farmer. Then
a very pleasant outride with up
to 17 horses would take place,
through some of the most picturesque
countryside, outstanding
was the farm Etemba.
Our very able and responsible
trainer Mr Erbslöh guided
us without any mishaps, as he
was a very responsible leader
and took into account riders,
who might not be to good at
horse riding. But the better rider
could go over jumps or
into ditches etc.
On returning to the farm,
after approximately an hour
or two in the saddle we would
be treated to drinks and lovely
foods for lunch. Swimming
pools were available at farms,
if weather was hot. These were
welcomed immensely. Even
an after lunch siesta was offered
to the weary, after a ride.
Afternoons would be started
off with riding instructions by
Mr Erbslöh, or even a visitor
Mr Anders would assist in these
lessons. After all the afternoon
events, riders would return
home, tired but happy.
Omaruru: Many Happy Memories
annual show jumping and
dressage tournament. This is
supported by all neighbouring
Namibian horse clubs, as well
as quite a few S.A. riders taking
part in the past. These riders
from S.A. have not been participating
lately, as travelling
does not seem such an easy issue
these days. But we are hoping
for their participation in
the future again.
Omaruru started off with
meagre funds and all catering
etc. was done under tarpaulins
borrowed from the Railways
and put up as shelter for food
and drinks sold. Highlight of
our show would in those days
be the „Reiterball”, which was
only held in style at a local hotel,
always beautifully decorated
by able ladies, namely one
being Mrs Putz, wife of the
late Dr. Putz, who practised in
Omaruru.
As years went by Mr Rudolf
Scherer who took the chair
from Denis Lang, as he was
in town and more able to be
available for the clubs needs.
Mr Scherer never spared himself
when it came to work for
the club or finance out of his
own finances. A clubhouse
was built, which had a bar plus
cooling facilities, kitchen etc.
Things were made that much
easier for the caterers. The
committee even went as far as
getting a band of bugel players
Blass orchestra out from Germany.
This of course lifted the
show to such a stimmung that
we were overfull at dances.
They also performed during
the riding events. These great
as well as wonderful dancers.
I personally remember being
partner to them on several occasions
which lasted to early
hours of the following mornings.
All gentlemen and wonderful
people to have with us.
As time went on Mr Scherer
also had to leave town to take
up a position in Okahandja,
were he later on in years passed
away. He did not rest though
until he visited Omaruru once
again to secure the future of
the Omaruru club. He chose
some one he knew would continue
riding as well as have the
club interest at heart. This was
Adrian Lang, who took the
chair for 7 years. His daughter
now has become champion
in children´s classes at the
Auas view tournament. So Mr
Scherer must have foreseen
that when we grew old, there
would be a follow up. Three
cheers to Scherer, we remember
him fondly for his love and
dedication to the sport and to
equine as such.
Workloads also shifted
chairmanship to Heiner Dörgeloh
and eventually was taken
over by Christa Kahl, another
great lady who never spares
herself when it comes to work
or financial support from her
side. The club, stables etc. is
run beautifully and cannot be
done better by members living
outside of Omaruru. The older
riders like myself, the late
Otto Traupe, our faithful barman
and also rider of the past,
all have hung up our boots,
but still love our horses and the
sport. We help were we can, I
stand in for judging when needed,
as this is quite a headache
at shows and very expensive to
get judges from S.A. So even
all the oldies sit in and fortunately
have had the experience
of riding at shows and still do
their bit. n
