EGER-TOKAJ WINE REGION
With its unparalleled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage
this region offers wide ranging attractions and activities.
The “Romantic Region”, as it is often described, is home to
Hungary’s highest mountain peak and smallest village, as well
as the first printed Bible in the Hungarian language from the
16th century and the oldest narrow-gauge mountain railway
from the 19th. And one of Hungary’s best-known exports,
the delicious Tokay Aszu wine also comes from this region.
Add Europe’s most beautiful horse breeding area and its most
extensive stalactite cave system, and you’ll understand why
the region has three of Hungary’s eight UNESCO designated
World Heritage sites.
The Northern Hills offer a range of leisure activities, from
extreme sports to wood carving and basket making. You can
collect minerals in the mountains, sample sweets in the Sugar
Museum, explore the caves underground and climb the rocks
above, or get a bird’s eye view from a hang glider. For the more
down-to-earth types there is over six hundred miles of marked
nature trails to explore, either on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Organised castle tours and bird-life photo-safaris complement
the activities on offer. With an abundance of game and fish, the
woods and streams are very popular for hunting and angling.
The Rivers Tisza and Sajó, and the fast and quite challenging
rivers of Hernád and Bódva are a favourite among experienced
rowers and canoeists, but first timers can also have a go on the
friendly and quiet Bodrog.
Look back, and you’ll discover a history as diverse as nature
itself. Prehistoric man, mystical medieval dwellers and leading
figures from modern times have all left their marks on this
land. Eger-Tokaj wine region – explore the past and get ready
