zahlreiche Weltrekorde
Im Land der Superlative weist auch die Scheich-
Zayed-Moschee am Rande Abu Dhabis einige
Weltrekorde auf. So liegt der weltgrößte, im Iran
geknüpfte Teppich ( 7.119 m² ) im Hauptgebetsraum
; der größte Kristall-Leuchter erstrahlt im
Inneren und die weltgrößte Kuppel, die je für
den Bau einer Moschee geschaffen wurde ( 70
Meter hoch, 32,8 Meter im Durchmesser ) bildet
den krönenden Abschluss der Gebetshalle. Auf
Wunsch scheich zAyeds wurden ausschließlich
natürliche Materialien wie Gold, Halbedelsteine,
Marmor, Kristalle und Keramiken verarbeitet. In
moslemischen Gotteshäusern ist es untersagt,
Menschen oder Tiere abzubilden ; so folgten
die Künstler sowohl den islamischen Vorgaben
als auch dem Wunsch des Begründers der VAE
und setzten hauptsächlich florale Motive zur Verzierung
ein. Die Moschee umfasst 1.096 Pfeiler
im äußeren Bereich und 96 im Hauptgebetsraum,
geschmückt von 20.000 handgearbeiteten Fliesen
im Blumendesign. Neben den drei großen Leuchtern
im Hauptgebetsraum erstrahlen vier weitere
in den Nebenräumen. Das Licht bricht sich in tausenden
feinstgeschliffener Swarovsky-Kristalle.

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque on the edge of
town has already set a few world records in
this land of superlatives. The main prayer
room has the world’s largest rug which was
handmade in Iran and is 7,119 square meters
in size. The world’s largest crystal chandelier
illuminates the world’s largest dome in a
mosque of its kind ( 70 meters high and 32.8
meters across ) and gives the crowning finish
to the prayer room. According to hh sheikh
zayed’s wishes, only natural materials were
used, like gold, semi-precious stones, marble,
crystal and ceramic. It is not allowed to depict
people or animals in Islamic houses of worship;
therefore the artists followed the Islamic
teachings and the wishes of the founder of
the UAE and used mostly floral motifs as decoration.
The mosque has 1,096 pillars in the
outer area and 96 in the main prayer room
and is decorated with 20,000 handmade tiles
with flower designs. Besides the three great
chandeliers in the main prayer room, there are
four more which illuminate adjoining rooms.
The light reflects in thousands of finely cut
Swarovski crystal prisms.
