19 Die Hochschulbibliothek: Geschichte(n) in zehn Büchern

E-book: Encyclopaedia of textile

Reutlingen University Library, like many
other academic libraries, is testing
electronic books, known as e-books, which
are increasingly being offered by
publishers. The advantages are obvious:
the e-books can be called up from any
computer with internet access on the
Reutlingen campus. And those who don`t
want to read from a screen can print out
the chapters required. Such flexibility
doesn`t cost much more than the
acquisition of a new conventional book
for the library shelves. An increasing
number of electronic titles are coming
on to the market, some of them in PDFformat,
others as virtual parallel editions
to the printed version.
With its range of e-books the University
Library is taking a further step in the
direction of electronic services. The start
of 2005 saw the introduction of the
electronic acquisition system, by means
of which professors and lecturers can
send their requests for book orders online
direct from their workplace to the library
via the internet. This means that ordering
and cataloguing are speeded up and made
more transparent, and multiple orders
are avoided. In October 2005 the new
library website went live: The website is
completely bilingual, and the printed
resources of the university library are
listed in full in the online-catalogue and
are available round the clock. Catalogue
searches, information on whether books
are available for loan, or links for a
systematic search are available at any
time from anywhere in the world.

Handbuch schriftliche Bewerbung
„Hier haben wir fast alles gekauft, was
wichtig ist“, meint die Bibliotheksleiterin
mit Blick auf die Bewerbungsratgeber,
die normalerweise drei Meter Regal füllen,
doch fast immer zu dreiviertel
ausgeliehen sind und für die es viele
Vormerkungen gibt. Ein generelles
Problem, wie Katharina Ebrecht nicht
zuletzt aus einer Umfrage vor zwei Jahren
weiß. Festgestellt wurden damals die
Zufriedenheit der Benutzer mit den
bestehenden Angeboten der Bibliothek,
beklagt wurden darin vor allem die
mangelnde Verfügbarkeit der Bücher. Bei
den Neuerwerbungen orientiert sich die
Hochschulbibliothek an der Ausleihe.
Häufig ausgeliehene und vorgemerkte
Titel werden nachbestellt, um die
Nachfrage besser und schneller
befriedigen zu können. Die Zahlen geben
ihr recht. Durch gezielte Nachbestellungen
konnten die Ausleihquoten in den
vergangenen Jahren deutlich erhöht
werden.

Manual for writing job applications
In this area we have bought almost
everything that is worth buying, says
Katharina Ebrecht, looking at the
application guides which normally occupy
three metres of shelf-space. However,
three-quarters of them are nearly always
out on loan or reserved. This is a general
problem of which the Head Librarian is
well aware, and which was confirmed in
a survey conducted two years ago. This
survey established that, whilst users
were, on the whole, satisfied with the
resources offered by the Library, they
nonetheless complained that books were
often out on loan and thus unavailable
for other users. The University Library
now takes frequency of issue as a guide
when purchasing new resources. In order
to satisfy demand better and more
quickly, additional copies are ordered of
titles which are frequently borrowed or
reserved. The figures show that this
approach is effective. In the last few
years the policy of ordering extra copies
of specific titles has led to a marked
increase in the number of books issued.

Erfolgreich studieren
Auf der Liste der Neuerwerbungen findet
sich auch die Anleitung zum erfolgreichen
Studieren, gedacht – so der Titel- für
Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftler
gleichermaßen. Etwa 3.500 Monografien
für 120.000 Euro wurden 2006 allein für
die Hochschule Reutlingen gekauft.
Seit 2002 dürfen die einzelnen Fakultäten
selbst entscheiden, wie viel Geld sie für
die Neuanschaffung von Büchern
ausgeben möchten. Doch in welcher Höhe
sich die Zuwendungen für die Bibliothek
bewegen oder wann diese darüber
verfügen kann, ist jedes Jahr völlig offen.
Für Katharina Ebrecht ein
unbefriedigender Zustand: „Ich finde es
absurd, wenn die Bibliothek mit
Lehraufträgen und Dienstreisen für
Professoren konkurrieren muss. Im
schlechtesten Fall steht für den Neukauf
von Büchern gar kein Geld mehr zur
Verfügung“. Außerdem seien mit dieser
Vergabeart Grabenkämpfe zwischen den
Fakultäten vorprogrammiert, denn jede
Fakultät möchte, dass „ihre“ neu
gekauften Bücher nur von ihren Studenten
genutzt werden. Die Bibliotheksleiterin
hält von diesem Verursacherprinzip wenig,
zumal es eine Reihe fachübergreifender
Werke wie Wörterbücher, Lehrbücher für
Deutsch als Fremdsprache oder
allgemeine Handbücher gibt. „Hauptsache,
das Buch ist vorhanden, egal,wer es
bestellt hat“.
Mit Blick auf die Studiengebühren hat die
Bibliotheksleiterin im September
vergangenen Jahres einen Antrag auf
Erhöhung des Zentraletats der Bibliothek
von 300.000 Euro gestellt. Schließlich
sollen die Studiengebühren für die
Verbesserung der Studienbedingungen
ausgegeben werden und dazu gehöre
auch eine gute Bibliothek. Würde diesem
stattgegeben, hätte Katharina Ebrecht
die notwendige Planungssicherheit und
dann könnte sie die Hochschulbibliothek
mit einer zeitgemäßen und
bedürfnisorientierten Konzeption
weiterentwickeln.

Among the list of titles of new

studying, intended as the title says for
students of both Business and Social
Science. In 2006 alone roughly 3,500
books were purchased for Reutlingen
University at a cost of 120,000 Euros.
Since 2002 the individual Schools have
been able to decide for themselves how
much money they wish to spend on the
acquisition of new books. But every year
the level of the funds available for the
Library, and the date on which they
become available, are left completely
