Things never come out how you’d expect. That’s what my grandmother
used to say about the future. And who would deny it? If you’re trying
to predict how things might develop in one area or another, you make
an analysis taking account of all the variables you can, evaluate the
available options and finally draw your conclusions. Our experience,
intuition and ability for abstract thinking play a decisive role in the
process – or so we think. Then chance pulls a joker out of its sleeve,
exceeds the limits of our imagination, makes the most unlikely
possibilities a reality and renders our efforts to understand the world
feeble and ineffective.
The same goes for us: unfortunately we can’t tell you with certainty
what the future holds, but we can offer you an insight into how »The
Present of Futures Past« looks (p. 10), show you a few ideas about how
we might travel in the future (p. 16), what fashions we’ll be wearing
(p. 48), where we might live (p. 20) and how nice it might be there
(p. 78). But on one thing we can all agree: the real question is how
we can influence the future. Regardless of the obstacles and surprises
the future holds for us, what makes life so special is we also have
opportunities to influence events, invent new things and so shape our
future.
That’s exactly how the subjects of our »future issue« see things too.
Businesspeople, scientists, designers, architects, artists and visionaries
who are taking fate into their own hands and making history. It always
starts with an idea. Then with courage to spare and unstoppable drive, it
becomes an affectionate answer to my grandmother: sometimes it comes
out just the way you planned!
