Atypical Architects
There are people who don’t enjoy thinking in stereotypes. Often, it is these same
people for whom a clichéd categorisation of their lives and work doesn’t do them
justice. The architects alexandeR PlajeR and WeRneR FRanz are just
like that. TexT Sebastian Anrnstorf
With the verve of the Wendejahre, the period of German reunification,
the two architects who have chosen Berlin as their home,
set up the Plajer & Franz Studio in 1996. Today they have a team of
40 architects and interior designers with internationally renowned
clientele. Their core competence is brand name architecture; their
motto: never let it get boring.
Alexander Plajer and Werner Franz have found Berlin to be the
perfect environment for their varied projects. They have advanced
here to become true multi-specialists and work in an endless variety
of areas including trade fairs, flagship stores, shop concepts
right through to a luxury hotel in Portugal, Premium Resorts in
Thailand and the conversion of the yacht once owned by Henry
Nannen.
Although their styling is in the classic modern tradition with
straight lines and simple shapes, their work has a special twist. At
the Geneva motor Show they presented the new BmW m5 on
a flaming red surface. At Galerie Lafayette, the young fashion department
has been given a club feel with a spotlit DJ mixing desk.
At Berlin’s Yi Spa, floral graphics and integrated colour concepts
enchant those seeking tranquility. Brand architecture has to respond
to the brand and give it a positive charge. In this regard
Plajer & Franz succeed in building elegant bridges and integrating
surprising elements to create an atmospheric overall concept. The
authentic brand concepts created in this way are thus reinforced
by the daring combinations of the most disparate materials and
shapes. macassar wood meets raw asphalt, metal wall coverings on
shroud-like textile, high-shine metallic on sand-blasted pine. Plajer
& Frank studio are consistent in their love of variety.
Alexander Plajer sees shop design as work with emotions, uniqueness
and high recognition value. He has granted us a look at the
cards in his hand.
What materials are your favourite?
Classic materials processed with modern technology or modern
materials with classic styling.
What inspires you? A very personal and intimate question … some
people need a glass of wine and a little stroll, others simply need
a few hundred yards of sketching paper. It was Brancusi who said
»Things are not difficult to make; what is difficult is putting ourselves
in the state of mind to make them«.
Who is your dream client? A client who has an island for a house
on a cliff, a plot of land for a hotel in Paris, a retail brand for high
end fashion, a pretty daughter …
One of the main characteristics of ArT+COM is the cleverly designed
transitions from the digital to the real world. With its entertaining and
interactive elements, the work, as an »art in construction« installation,
is integrated unobtrusively into the existing structure.
After studying architecture in Germany and a few years in New York with richard Meier and with
Tsao & McKown, the two felt the pull of Berlin. While economic scientists were discussing a lack
of purchasing power, Alexander Plajer and Werner Franz used the creative atmosphere of the
capital to achieve success.
»Things are not difficult to make; what is difficult is
putting ourselves in the state of mind to make them« Brancusi
Formensprache.
Was inspiriert Sie?
