Stadt verwandelte Einsamkeit. ‘Berlin – a city in which
she was a total stranger – seemed to her to be the ideal
place to live out her passion without being disturbed. Her
passion was drinking, living to drink, drunken living, the
life of a drinker.’ In Ottinger’s masterpiece ‘Bildnis einer
Trinkerin‘, the well-off protagonist is accompanied on her
slide into social and mental abandon by the lady drinker
from the Zoo Station. Ottinger creates portraits of two
fictitious characters, contrasting their social boundaries
as realistically as the exhaustively researched and accurately
depicted world they inhabit. The setting is Berlin.
In the course of the film, the city becomes a place where
the desire to drink oneself to death seems almost to be
an expression of a will to survive. Berlin as a place of isolation:
not – that would be too banal – isolation from the
outside world; also not – slightly less banal – inner isolation;
rather: Berlin as isolation itself, isolation in the shape
of a city.
